I believe most of them used to be optional to allow users some time to download them at their convenience and then they'd go mandatory by 'X' date and force the user to update. I suppose they did that in order to give people a choice of when to download as some people a system update can take...

You only get about 4-6 hours of the thing being switched on before it dies.
