I am just getting into the stock market, but I have been a sports handicapper for about 7 years now. It's my hobby and I have seen some profit in recent years. I feel like anything you can find an edge in no longer can be called gambling. If you have an edge, it'[s investing. Money talks.

I used to be involved in the stocks market but pulled out a few years ago. I lost around 30% of what I had when the economy went belly up – and that’s because only a third of my money went into it so effectively, everything involved in stocks and shares I’d lost.

I kept it in there until I’d recovered my losses (just) and then decided to take it out of stocks and shares. Comparing it keeping it in an ordinary savings account over the same period, I’d have probably made more that way, even with ridiculously low interest rates…!

It just didn’t work out for me unfortunately. I know some people have had a lot of success but a combination of bad timing and generally having very little luck meant I wasn’t going to gain anything from it.

It was a frightening experience for me and something I don’t want to repeat again.
