Cab you make any headset a virtual surround sound headset?

Can you make any headset a virtual surround sound headset?

I see on the amazon there are some USB sound cards that claim to be virtual surround sound. But nobody reviewing it is explicitly saying they used any of them on a PS4. Is it really that simple? Seems like something everyone would be talking about, the entire new wave of headsets coming out with virtual surround sound driver built in(with added cost). I notice headsets that are coming out with the exact same specs as their predecessor only with the virtual surround sound driver and maybe a different color.................... Is this a big secret nobody has really reported on, or is there some sciency stuff I'm not understanding?

THIS IS A PS4 ONLY QUESTION: I need to know if people have done it on ps4, issues they had on ps4, and any other tips ps4 related only. I know there are lots of people who have done it on pc, but ps4 is the only thing I am asking about.

I used to have something called 'Turtle Beach Earforce DSS sound proceccor' when I used to use a stereo headset on PS3.
It seemed to work fine but eventually I ditched it and went true surround.

There is a newer model available now called the 'DSS2'.

Official link here: http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/dolby-processor-accessories/ear-force-dss2/33

As for sound cards etc I cant comment on that, just the info on the DSS sound processor. It may or may not help you.

Info on how to set up for PS4 is here: http://support.turtlebeach.com/entry/830517609/
Note is says 'how to set up with PX33' but similar headsets should work too.

I found my old TurtleBeach Audio Advantage. Looked up the specs and claims 5.1 surround. I couldn't tell the difference. But I did notice better sound quality, foot steps in online FPS really were easier to detect. BTW, that sound card I mentioned is total garbage, cuts out every 5 min, no mic jack.

Anyone able to notice sounds that are above or below you with one of these usb external sound cards?

The old dss model is better than the newer one, I use akg701 headphones then use the astro mixamp pro for my surround sound then a schiit vali amp for more power just because astros mixamp has a bad amp inside it.

Technically most 5.1 gaming headsets are simulated surround. True surround requires multiple speakers inside the headset.

If you have a mixamp that simulates surround, and it has a 3.5mm heaphone out, it should attempt simulate surround to whatever you plug into it.
