Continuing game with different copy of disc?

Hi all, so... I borrowed a friend's copy of Watch Dogs and a few weeks later decided to buy my own copy. I bought it thinking I could just insert it and be able to continue from where I left off with my saved game data. I was pretty disappointed to find that the new disc was unable to read my saved data, my only option being to start the game from the beginning.

Any ways around this? Is this pretty typical of what happens? I honestly didn't think the physical disc mattered, as the game data was saved on the HD... Guess I was wrong!

It only happens when you buy a game that was a different region to his game. Do you know where he bought the game?

Ahhhhh..... Yes, the other game is a different region! Hadn't considered that'd be an issue! Anyone know why exactly the regions matter in this way?

I'm pretty bummed but I suppose there's nothing for it but to start again. Eh, could be worse...
