Ever been a victim of fake memory cards on the PS 1?

When I got my PS 1, it came bundled with one controller and a memory card. I was excited because the memory card would enable me to save my game. Well, I played a bit of Monsterseed here and Guardian's Crusade there and I was able to save my game. Then I tucked myself to sleep that night because I knew that I could continue where I left off tomorrow.

When the next day came and I wanted to continue playing, I was shocked to see that all my save files were no longer in the memory card! I tried dabbing several times again and I noticed that every time I would switch off the PS 1, the saved data would be erased too!

I bought another memory card and it was still the same! The files would be erased when the PS 1 was switched off. I opened the two memory cards and found that there was something like a battery inside. I ditched both, bought a see memory card with a see through case just to be sure, and I never experienced any problems ever again.

Did you ever fall prey to fake memory cards before?

I've never experienced anything like that. How were you able to save your game in the first place? That sounds weird. Which country did you live in when you bought your PS1?

I'm glad to say that I have never experienced this. Mainly due to the fact that I never got an PS1. My parents refused to buy me one since they thought I was already spoiled. Sorry for those of you who did get scammed though.

So far I haven't experienced fake memory cards, except that when I play FF7, the files get ruined. That's why I save more than one file just in case. When I play other games though, I don't experience file errors as I would with FF7.

No... did Sony just kind of hate you? This has never, ever been a thing for me. That said something tells me I would have just exited the game and left the system running if that was a problem. Ghettonomics.

Wait, were these false memory cards packaged with new consoles or only used or refurbished consoles? I've never even heard of them until you posted this. I am surprised that they exist. I can't believe that I haven't heard of this until now.

Damn you for reminding me of that! I had a memory card that i would use, and then other where i would store my last saves for safe keeping.
For some damn reason, that memory card got wiped in the later days. All those saves, lost forever...

Hmm. I haven't encountered such. In fact, my epic 8MB memory card is still working today. Haha

The key is never buy a knock-off memory card. Period. ;)

When we purchased a PS1, there was a free memory card that came with it. I think that the store that sold us the PS1 did not give us an original Sony memory card. Sigh. I don't know where they got these memory cards. I threw them away when I got a new one that worked. I could have shown you a picture.

Third party memory cards are buy at your own risk. I learned that too. When I bought the small, updated, adorable PSONE I tried using a third party card. The system didn't like it. It worked fine on one of the older ps1s but not the new one. I had to go get another Sony card and that worked fine. I discovered that this was Sony's doing because they wanted to force people to buy their memory cards.

I remember going to Best Buy and buying a cheap 3rd party memory card for like $7 for the PS1 because I wanted to play Final Fantasy VII again and had lost my old blue Sony memory card. This was well after the PS2 had been released so it was 3rd party heaven for the PS1 and all kinds of cheap controllers and memory cards. So I bought one took it home popped it in and started my quest once again and played a good 4 or 5 hours getting through the muddy beginning of the game and proceeded to save my game. A few days later I went to play it again and when I went to load the game all I got on the memory card was error over and over again. So yes, it has happened to me as well.
