Favorite Modern Setting World Series/Game

You've got Sleeping Dogs, GTA IV and V, Saints Row 2 through IV, Mafia 2, Mercenaries 2, Just Cause 2, Dead Island and Riptide, Far Cry 2 and 3--I'm sure I forgot a series or two. What were your favorites?

Personally I liked the GTA series on PS3 and loved the Saints Row series--that's between those two series. Of course it's not entirely fair since GTA only had 2 on PS3 while SR had 3, but of the two series I got more consistent fun out of SR. The story writing in the GTA series is rock solid and actually matured (GTA IV was pretty damn serious game) while SR's story writing was more in line with the blend of nonsense and seriousness of GTA VC, 3, and San Andreas (SR2 held itself together while SR3 and SRIV went completely off the rails). Plus I felt there was more to do in general in Saints Row when not doing missions.

Saints Row 2 has a special place in my heart since there were no mandatory racing missions...plenty of chase missions, a few optional keep away missions, and a number of timed ones, but I'm not a fan of racing missions and this was like the GTA I always wanted to play.

As for others I enjoyed, roughly all of the ones I listed except for Mafia 2 and Far Cry 2.

I like Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row, and GTA. You forgot about Yakuza though (which is also a good series, a little restrictive as far as running around, but still a good series).

GTA and Just Cause 2, but I like Far Cry 3 as well. It's a hard 4, soft 3 on this particular list. If you bring in all open world games it get will probably drop.

I thought about Yakuza yesterday. I like the series, it reminded me of a more badass Shenmue.

Yakuza is a good series. I always thought that Ryo and Kazuma could've easily crossed paths, but the Shenmue series was never finished.

I used to think that as well. They could've crossed at sometime in 80s after Ryo's adventure was done in China.

Lately it's been Saint Rows IV and GTA5. I "enjoyed" the setting of Ace Combat Assault Horizon as well but I just love anything with fighter jets..and the previous games were better but it was still fun and I wish we more real world games that centered around air combat.

Of the games you listed GTA IV as to be my favorite. Personally I don't find the story writing in the GTA series to be that good or what nets them sales.
The open world, the ability to do things you would normally never think of and the randomness is what keeps driving me to buy the game.
With that said I have to mention Saints Row as well, honorable mention to the fourth installment of the series. It was and is extremely fun to play.

I like all of the games that you listed above but out of all of them I have to go with GTA 5 and sleeping dogs. I like sleeping dogs because it was a breathe of fresh air to play an open world game in a place other then a setting that looks like America. I loooove GTA 5 that game was off of the chain! I have never enjoyed a video game that much. The game has action from start to finish. Now the graphics and the open world is beautiful, every single time that I play that game I am taken to a different world I literally feel like every time that I am playing that game that I literally in the game and that is a cool feeling.

I'd pick GTA as well or maybe Yakuza. I'm mostly looking forward to Watch Dogs, though, because I think the city looks great in that game and surely there will be a lot more interaction with the environment in this game and hopefully other games in the future library of this gen's consoles as well.
