Getting ready to upgrade my hard drive

I'm upgrading to a 1TB hard drive because I have a lot of games and stuff on my PS3, lol. I think I know what I'm doing but I just wanted to make sure. Since I want to keep all my saves and everything on my system, I back up the hard drive to an external hard drive, then install the new hard drive, format the new hard drive and restore the backup from my external. Right? Or am I missing something? Thanks!

Make damn sure you back up your saves. You can download game data and such but can never replace your saves. Unless you do it on a usb stick too. Dude, just go to youtube, that's how I installed mine. Though I can basically fix desktop pc's and take em apart and rebuild, I still have trouble with the damn ps3 when it comes to hardware or fixin problems.

Yes, YouTube is the best source for any how-to. I'm sure there are hundreds of videos showing you how to do it. You're gonna be fine.

I back up my PS3 on an external hard drive once a month at least (more if I do heavy gaming). After 5 hours of it backing up I replaced it and restored the system (took another 3 :/ ) But I have to say its nice having a 1TB hard drive. A quick YouTube video showed me what to do, since I can't find my damn manual, lol. It was definitely a lot easier replacing the hard drive than it was to crack it open to replace my laser.

Ok, so here's my question when it comes to memory size, saving game data, etc...do you really need a terabyte of storage space to store active game saves? I know that the games are more complex these days and that game saves require more space than they used to, but to me, it almost sounds like there is a serious need to manage storage space...like combining duplicate saves into one file, deleting old game saves that are no longer relevant, etc. I've never understood how anyone can use up the amount of internal storage that one of these devices has. But I am a casual gamer rather than a hardcore gamer, so this might be the difference, too.

Really, no. I didn't need a terabyte. I have 120gig model slim and with the games I have and plan to buy, 500GB would have been more than enough. In the 4 years I had it, I just filled it. But its not the saves that's the problem. A lot of games only require, say, 50MB. Others, like GTAV require 8GB just to install, not counting the saves. It'll add up. And if you are a person who downloads games and not buys the discs, you'll run out very quickly. Depends on how you game (disk vs. download) or how much you game (installs and amount of games you have). I got a terabyte just in case. And disk space is cheap enough now its worth spending the extra money for more. When I was looking for hard drives, a terabyte was only like 10-15 bucks more than a 500GB so it made sense to me to just spend the extra money and never worry about it again.

I got like you Titan but I just uninstalled a bunch of games. i.e deleting the download and patch. I mean if you've got a lot of downloaded digital games then maybe but I never did, I think I had 5 in total and never played them so they went off my console pretty fast.

Yeah. Went well the day after Xmas, lol. Works pretty well. Now if only the hard drive that I installed on my computer didn't mess with my system.

Oh. SIDE NOTE. Anyone tell me what's going on with my computer? Installed a 2TB in my computer as well and now for some reason, when I start it up and not by the computer, it goes to a screen that says to restart the computer and select what drive to boot to. I have to then hit F8 and manually select the system hard drive. Then it boots up fine. Its not the end of the world but annoying. I start my computer in the morning and make a cup of coffee and dont want to sit there waiting for this damn thing to boot every day to hit F8. Anyway to just set it so I don't have to do that?

I haven't messed much with boot settings, but it sounds like something isn't set up properly. Like, if the computer doesn't have an order or priority for boot devices and so it can't pick which to use when booting or something like that. Go into your BIOS settings and look for boot settings, might find something relevant there.

Thanks. That's what I figured I'd have to do. I'm leaning towards reinstalling Win 7. Though I don't want to because my computer game saves and everything are on there. Wish there was a miracle fix all program that makes it run perfectly again, lol.

I've never upgraded a PS3 drive before. What's that like? Does it accept normal HDD's (2.5 or 3.5") or is there a specially made drive for PS3's. I mean, I doubt that Sony makes TB drives for the PS3. Also, how do you take the hard drive out. I've seen an area on the PS3 that looks like it's made for replacing the hard drive, but I've never touched it because I don't want to wreck anything. Anyways, have fun upgrading and don't forget to backup your data.

I need to do this soon, when I went to Gamestop to get a used one, I thought getting a old one with backwards compatibility would be cool. I've yet to use that feature but I am quickly running out of HDD space. How much did a 1TB HDD cost you?
