Jailbreaking the PS3

So what are the advantages of Jailbreaking the PS3? I want to do it but I want to see what it gives. I know the disadvantages of jailbreaking like bricking though so that is something that worries me. Has anyone ever regreted jalbreaking their PS3?

Well, the main reason to do it is so you can make backups of your games and play them on the PS3. Of course, that would also mean that you could backup someone else's games and play them on your own PS3. I suppose jailbreaking might also bring back the Linux booting ability.

Here is my advice, please don't ever do it. No, just plain no. Why are you doing it/ To play games for free without giving the awesome devs their share for the heard work they have done/

It's basically the same thing as having a J-Tagged Xbox 360. It lets you play bootlegged games and such, and have access to the developer consoles, I believe.

...you making it sound like the best thing ever. If Capcom keeps screwing with my favorite series and filling every game with DLC, can i pirate their games with no remorse?
Also, it's called custom firmware, jailbreak is for Apple devices because you are removing the restrictions, while with consoles you are changing their firmware to do whatever you want.

Only did it for two systems, but it's too much of a bother to do it, so i recommend you to just go legal with this one.

Well, it's up to the individual who is doing it whether or not they have any remorse. But, as a rule of thumb, bootlegging games for personal use isn't very high on the scale of evil.

Installing custom firmware on the PS3 is not illegal. But, it is a pain in the ass.

I might just not bother. I can deal with hassle but not when it doesn't really give me much. Making backups of my games my be good but I can't be bothered. I have hacked my wii and rooted my phone so the only reason I was asking is to keep the trend going with my devices. Guess I am not going to do it then. I don't really care on screwing the devs for some games because they screw you over with DLC and you can't do that because you need to pay for this and stuff. I have bought the game, why can't I do some missions without downloading anything.

I definitely feel for you. I also changed the firmware on the two Wiis that i have gotten (sold them because i needed the money, but if i can i want to build a Wii collection someday) and don't even get me started with PSP. For myself i think i managed to have 7 different consoles and more than 50 for people that wanted me to put a custom firmware on theirs. Good times.

But since i got my PS3 and PSVita, i have gone back to normal because i really like to have my physical games collection.

A lot of people here in my place jailbreak their PS3. There are a lot of shops here that offer jailbreaking services and a lot of shops that offer downloaded games to be stored in the PS3 hard drive or external disk in order to be played without the need of a physical copy of the game. If you want to jailbreak your PS3, just go to an expert and do not tinker with the console yourself.

People say they wanna jailbreak their PS3 (or whatever console for that matter) so they can play back up's of their games. But come on,let' be real here,I think the overwhelming majority of people who do that really just download games and/or play pirate copies, whether they actually have the game or not.

I wouldn't do it - and not because I care about bootlegs. Jailbreaking just seems to increase the chance of screwing up your console, and that's already something that happens to often as it is.

At first I was like "what is jailbreaking a ps3". I haven't posted on internet forums until a couple years ago so I am a little bit out of the loop. So it means getting free games. I'm all for it. Look, I work 40+ hours per week for peanuts. The economy is in the crapper. Sony is a multi-billion dollar company. The companies that make the software are for the most part very profitable. If you weren't born to parents that are doctors or professors then you have to take anything that you can get. Viva la revolution.

Yes, but by that same reasoning or similar you get BS DRM and Region-locking and expensive digital gaming. Because the folks who support all that look at all the jailbreaking and go: "I work 40+ hours a week for only a little better than peanuts. The economy is in the crapper. Everybody is getting laid off and leaving me their work to do in addition to my own. People aren't buying luxury items like they used to so I could get a pink-slip any day and lose my house thereby putting my family on the street. I have kids - so screw the "consumer" if they want to "jailbreak" then lets make it impossible to do so. Long Live the Empire." Stealing is stealing, and I have gotten many a digital copy of something for free - but I'm not going to pretend that I'm not shortchanging someone.

I can see where some people might do that, but, to be honest, as a guy who is mainly a casual gamer, making bootlegged games does not appeal to me. First, I have to either copy the game from a friend or download the torrent, both of which take time. Then I have to write the game back to Blu-Ray, which is more time plus I have to shell out the money for the blank media. And there's no guarantee that it'll work when I'm done. Nah. I'll pay for the game, and, if I think it's too much, I'll either wait until it drops in price or I'll buy it used.
