Playing old games on PS3?

Teagan

I'm planning on getting a PS3 soon, but I was wondering: can I play old games from the PS1/PS2 on it? I've been trying to Google the answer but some sources say I can and some say I can't. Which is the right answer?

Yes you can play older version of games on PS3. What you can't play are some PS3 games where you insert them in either PS1 or PS2.

So I can play PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3? Without exception? Some people said only some versions of the PS3 could play PS2 games, or something like that. It's so confusing!

I have heard that you have to have a certain PS3 to play old games, but I could be wrong. I know there are 2 PS3s, one is more expensive than the other. I read that the more expensive one can play older games. I don't know all that much about it, sorry.

Thanks Teagan for the question and everyone for the answers. I've been putting off getting a PS3 for this very reason and now I might as well get one before the Christmas sales start.

I'm sure they would sell more of the Playstation 3 if people realized that they could play the older games they love. I mean, that's why people get a Playstation to begin with. Games become kind of addictive and people sometimes like to play the same one for years.

I've played many old games on my Playstation 3 and they worked very well. I'm surprised to see that some people didn't know that Sony has mentioned about the compatibility between older games and new consoles several times. You can also find lists online with the games that are compatible.

Nintendo usually likes to keep things pretty close to its vest, so you'd expect details about the Wii U, the company's next generation console, to be pretty scant right now.

Not all older games can be played on the Playstation 3. It really depends on what version you get. The 20 and 60 Gig Playstation 3 are almost entirely Backwards compatible with the entire Playstation 2 Library, with a few exceptions. Any other storage size, or the newer, slim PS3's have custom firmware you can install but have severe drawbacks to certain games. This can range from low frame rate, to corrupted data, to just running like complete garbage. Here's a full list of all titles that are supported by the 20/60Gb PS3 and any extra information in terms of problems you may encounter.

EDIT*
I don't have the required amount of posts to post a link, so instead I'll tell you to google "List of Backwards Compatible Games PS3" and it'll be the first link from Wikipedia.

I played the classics. The entire Ratchet and Clank series up to Gladiators.
I used to have fun with the game on the PS2, now on the PS3 with a bigger TV it's pretty great!
