PS2 vs the Dreamcast

PS2 would go on to become a legendary beast in its own right; it was just last September that the final games were released for it. The Dreamcast always had so much going for it and is a very influential console that was way ahead of its own time. It's very unfortunate it could not get a solid user base as it could have been a great competitor.

i was definitely sad to see sega get out of the console market. However, it may have ultimately saved the company as the arcade business was still HUGE when they decided to get out.

Dreamcast was an awesome console. It's too bad that it fizzled out. There were some pretty cool games on it, I remember playing a lot of Worms Armageddon.

Sigh sometimes I wonder how different life would with Dreamcast still on the market. PS2 had better games but DC is still such an iconic console... I think Shenmue is one of my all time favorite games.

The Dreamcast was awesome. You could go online, the controller and the console looks amazing. Unfortunately there wasn't enough awareness and some bad development choices were made. Remember that game that cost millions and millions and was meant to be like a film? That flopped. Plus loads of wacky Asian games. A real shame, I used to love having to choose from 3 different console brands. Come back Sega!!!

It really came down to popularity. Playstation was a pretty well known name compared to the dreamcast at the time.

That is incorrect. Everyone knew the Dreamcast. Sega was the main competitor of Nintendo until Sony came around. The issue was that the PS2 came not too long after teh Dreamcast and was significantly more advanced than it.

Perhaps in your area, but i know that where i am Sony was very popular and well known compared to SEGA. By time a lot of the people i know heard of the dreamcast the PS2 was on the doorstep.

I think that if they didn't failed as hard with the Saturn, the Dreamcast would have more support from the beginning. That was the final nail on the hardware division for Sega, which is a same because they did tons of things right, but no one had the time for it when comparing to a rising beast that Playstation brand was becoming.

i remember being in highschool. i was subscribed to everything dreamcast. Talked dreamcast all day. Then someone said something about a new playstation and i was like "a new huh?"

I'm not arguing that Sony wasn't more popular than Sega. What I'm saying is that things would have been a lot different if the Dreamcast was up to par with the PS2 and the consoles that followed, the XBox and Gamecube.

That was one of the problems too. Where I live people knew about the Dreamcast but for most of them it was "that Sega console which isn't as good as the PS2". The quality of the console of course comes down to opinion but it wasn't exactly popular in a good way.

The PS2 won out of nothing but a better library. Simple as that. The Dreamcast just had nothing worth playing that wasn't available elsewhere.

If Sega stayed in the market imagine what they would have now.. If they outdid the PS2 then they can definitely outdo any console. It's really too bad, I loved sonic to death.

I have both, but I played the Dreamcast in the early years before the PlayStation 2 came out, then when the PlayStation 2 came out. Almost 2 years later, I got one, and I abandoned the Dreamcast (Sorry Dreamcast... ). I played a lot out of the PlayStation 2 as well as the PlayStation 1 (PS1 or PSX). I love the PlayStations. The only one I don't have is the PlayStation 4, but I'm probably going to get it, a year or 2 before the PlayStation 5 comes out, same as the later models that come out.
