PS4 Camera - Necessary?

Hi there,

I got lucky with timing and was able to pick up a console at a local FutureShop late last week. My girlfriend wants Just Dance, so I figured I would need to get a camera too. I asked a guy at BestBuy if it was a necessity for the game, but he was zero help.

So I have a couple questions:

1) In general, what is the useage for the PS4 camera? What does it enhance and is it really necessary for any game?
2) For Just Dance (...I'm embarrassed haha), do you need the Move accessory as well? Is there a PS4 hand remote coming out eventually or what's the requirement for this?

Well it was used during the streaming to things like Twitch.tv.. but some people thought it was required to pleasure themselves on camera for all to see, so that route really isn't available anymore (for now)..

Not sure what other uses it has at this point. Probably chatting.

If you look online on Just Dance you should see if the game needs it. Like the BestBuy corporate drone, I am zero help on the matter.

K good. I was hoping it wasn't really necessary for anything. I know it's only $60, but I've never had interest in getting a camera for a console.

It depends on what you want it for. I might purchase it because Just Dance is a fun series and was the only reason to own a Kinect and I think I'd enjoy the new one. If you want to start streaming to Twitch or Ustream then you might want the eye, and you might want the Playroom since it's going to be expanded upon by DoubleFine. But if none of that appeals to you then you can skip it.

So far I haven't used the camera too much personally. I use it mostly for the voice commands you can do for the PS4 but I haven't played any games. I believe it also uses facial recognition to log you into your PSN account. As far as I know you don't need any other controllers like the Playstation Move needed.

Yeah, so far it seems as though it is mainly needed for Just dance. However, take a look in the playroom and you will see that you have some more entertainment in there which you can access with the camera.I actually noticed that they offer an air hockey game in there and also interaction with the little people who come out of your controller. At the end of the day, the camera just enhances your ps4 experience.

I would argue that both the old and new Kinect are better than the ps4 camera. People were hacking the first Kinect to use as an electronic eye for robots for christsakes. The makers of it, PrimeSense, had much more in mind for it than just a gaming accessory.
Also, it's clear the Kinect is a major part of MS's Xbone strategy. This means that you'll probably see MUCH more games supporting the kinect than ones for the PS4 camera.

Like people have said, if you don't want to stream on Twitch, use the Playroom, or play games like Just Dance then the Eye isn't necessary. Unlike the Kinect which is pretty integral still to the Xbox One, the EYE is very optional so you don't have to buy it unless you really want it. Or maybe you're a fan of Doublefine who are developing EYE specific games.
