Sony PlayStation Return - Warranty Payment

My son's PS4 started to freeze in FIFA 15 and sometimes it would not turn on at all, and I opened it trying to see if I could fix it but no joy.

I called SONY and asked them if they could repair it and they said yes as long as I pay the £125 "warranty fee" and I have heard that in these cases they either repair it or send you another console.

I am not sure however if after seeing that the console has been opened will they still try to fix it or send me another one, or will I lose my £125 ? Does anyone know?

Well,it does say if you have opened it yourself you have voided your warranty (Apart from changing the HDD,thats OK).
But...I didnt know there was a 'warranty fee' ? Thats hardly a warranty is it?

What about instead of Sony see what happens if you contact the place you bought it from?
Also,I presume its under 1 year since purchase still?

Generally, if it's over the 1 year warranty, you have to pay for Sony to fix it. Otherwise, within the year, you shouldn't have to pay anything. But since you opened it, it doesn't matter and you have to pay them to fix it.

Hi

I do not mind paying the £125 to have the PS4 repaired or replaced.

What I am afraid of is that after I pay the £125, SONY will say "sorry, this PS4 has been opened, we are not going to repair it or replace it, and you lose the £125".

Has anyone got experiences with the above scenario?

Akis, I doubt they will "steal" £125 from your pocket. Eventually, they might ask more money but you will obtain the repair or replacement for sure.

We sent it off yesterday and paid £125 for the "warranty". Let's see what they do with it.

It seems that Sony used lead-free solder on the CPU/GPU inside the PS4 and with the heat the pads come undone and the repair consists of removing the CPU and resetting it. If you have the equipment and the skills.

That's the problem. Most people don't For a repair like that, I'd rather spend the 125 to have them professionally do it. I can replace parts, but soldering is out of my comfort zone. At least you figured out the problem! Where do you have your PS4? I wonder if you have it in a well ventilated area. Unless you got a lemon (which happens), you have to ensure these consoles have proper ventilation since they generate a lot of heat. I always keep my consoles on top of my TV stand to make sure they have good airflow for proper cooling. I don't put them inside the glass of my TV stand for heating concerns

The CPU/GPU on the PS4 is a square IC, maybe 2"x2" (from memory), and has underneath it something like 200 pins with sub 0.5mm clearances. Intel CPUs sit on a special base and are mechanically held down so that their hundreds of pins are firmly connected. But on the PS4 there is no base, the CPU is soldered onto the PCB, each and every one of those hundreds of pins are soldered on the PCB underneath the IC, it is done with hot air guns. Bad design and bad choice of solder (lead free) which does not do well with the temperature changes.

Another reason I wouldn't want to F with it And I agree. I didn't know that before but it does sound like a poor design. Only reason I think they probably went that way is to cut production costs.
