Games that would make good movies

Admittedly, the track record for video game based movies has been pretty terrible. Uwe Boll's clunkers, the Street Fighter movie, Mario etc were all really terrible. The only half decent movies I can think of were Mortal Kombat and Hitman.

But I think there is a ton of potential in a lot games' story lines for a cinematic adaptation. So, which games do you think would make good movies?

For my money, GTA: Vice City if properly treated has a good movie in there somewhere. Tommy Vercetti's rise to the top seems to have a lot of potential as cinematic gold if touched by someone like a Scorsese. While some might say that the game's open world charm would be lost in a movie but I still think there is potential here.

Another game that has a good movie in it somewhere, is Silent Hill 2. I am not talking about a Silent Hill movie here, that's already been done, but one based on Pyramid Head.

I really want to see a legitimate Castlevania movie. It wouldn't be too hard to do, and yet nobody has even thought to try. I hear they're working on a Portal movie and Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) is doing World of Warcraft! I can't wait for those. :)

Uncharted would be fantastic, though the world's fascination for Indiana Jones-esque adventures might have soured after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I would still watch it, no doubt.

Heavy Rain would be outright incredible with the right actors.

Not sure if you've seen it, but Vice City borrows a lot of elements from Scarface. So if you wanted to see something close to the story of the game, you might enjoy Scarface.

Personally I think Deus Ex could make a cool movie if handled right. I might have heard rumours that this might be the basis for a new movie but I'm not sure.

Also for the longest time, I though Splinter Cell could also make a great movie.

I wouldn't say that Vice City specifically borrows elements from Scarface. The mafia tropes used by the game are present in a lot of movies and not just Scarface. While Tommy Vercetti's rise to the top of the Vice City food chain may seem like what happened to Tony Montana in Scarface, the movie is very different from the game. If anything, Vice City has more in common with Goodfellas and I am not just talking about Ray Liotta.

In my opinion, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 would make a pretty decent movie. The story line had me interested through the whole campaign. It would take you through each character letting you get to know them better. Also, the mix of past and future stories/fire-fights just adds the cherry on top.

I would like to see a movie for God of War. I think that would make a really cool movie. My nephew doesn't think they will make one because they would need to spend a lit of time and money on the special effects. I kinda agree with him because the cut scenes in the game were awesome and they would have a helluva time doing that for a movie.

I can't see a good movie being made of a game, because scriptwriters just love to take retarded shortcuts. Like World War Z is an amazing book, but to see the movie you'd think it was trash - there is nothing common to either besides the title and a very loose definition of zombie. So if say you tried to a Last of Us movie that's what you're more then likely going to end up with... it's bull. Besides after the Silent Hill mess I just... no.

Seeing how they always manage to ruin movie adaptations out of games (seriously, there isn't a single one!), i guess i would go with something simple, like Serious Sam or something.

Assassin's Creed for me though as you said, the track record has been pretty bad .World of Warcraft movie is in the process and I am pretty excited about it. I hope they don't screw it up or my faith with the games based movie will never be restored. Final Fantasy the Advent Children I'd say is not so bad compare to others. The Asian version of Street Fighter was more of a comedy instead of a gaming based movie.

Mass Effect. So much Mass Effect. I would give anything for a Mass Effect movie as long as they made it in a ton of separate parts or just 1 big disk of hours for the movie since theres no way it would take just the standard 2 hours. The story is amazing and dramatic. Plus if a big film company picked it up they could really make the universe come to life. I doubt itd ever happen though because they rarely make movies of games and the amount of money it would take to make this movie would be crazy

I would love to see a movie based on "The Devil May Cry" series by Capcom I love the characters and overall evil post apocalyptic feel to the game where either everyone is an evil monster or wielding a weapon to kill one. I could totally see this being developed in the current climate of movies being made these days, the premise borderlines on the absurd but very entertaining and action packed for sure. Doubtful it will ever happen, I will just keep hacking and slashing away on the games and hope everyone else sees what a jewel this series really is.

I'm not denying that the Silent Hill movies were good, but with a video game series like Silent Hill, they could've made one of the scariest movie franchise especially with the first 3 games, but they under estimated it...

That was my first pick, my second pick is Resident evil, it's almost the same situation as Silent Hill. I really didn't like the character Alice taking all the attention over the main characters of the game. They should try an exact movie adaptaion of one of the games.

I'd vote for Halo. The first three games would make an awesome sci-fi trilogy. The mythos is there and so is the action. However, I feel like it could never be as popular as Star Trek or Star Wars since the main character always has his face covered. Halo fans would freak out if they showed Master Chief's face.

Uncharted, Last of us and Metal Gear Solid.
I think Nathan Fillion could play Drake and Josh Brolin could play Joel. He reminds me of a gruff southerner.
MGS is really more of a pipe dream because I don't believe that a studio would ever green light it.

Your right about a studio never green lighting a project like Metal Gear Solid it is has been done to death and very poorly at that. The tired old cliche of a grizzled special black ops military loner who pulls off massive campaigns by himself are the things of video games and Hollywood forgot how to have a good time a long time ago. Even though a MGS movie would most likely be worth watching for the stealth action scenes alone the best we can do is at this point is enjoy the games and hope Konami keeps making those.

I actually didn't like the movie. There were so many different ways they could have gone with a Silent Hill adaptation and they went with the most generic Hollywood way possible. That's why I would prefer it if they did it again, AND did it right. I guess its too much to ask for considering that its Hollywood and they always mess up adaptations.
