Do you think online play will support more players on ps4?

We saw it a bit on PS3 that there are games that can support tons of players in a match at once (such as MAG), do you think the PS4 builds on this and the standard number of players even in things such as COD games grows? Or are those limits low for a design reason and not for a technical reason?

I think it's possible but in order to improve other aspects I doubt it. Larger player counts isn't something that most players consider very important. I think this makes more sense for open world games like Dead Rising 3 though. Increased zombies on screen is something that players consider very important in comparison.

That would be cool. I had a blast playing MAG, the game play really felt organized and team-oriented. I would love to see a company expand on that theme of "quantity".

I would like to point out games like Planetside 2, War Thunder, Elder Scrolls Online, and Battlefield 4. These games are built to be massive team based multiplayer games.

The biggest limit on consoles is Peer 2 Peer servers. These limit player quantity. If they introduce dedicated servers for games, it will vastly improve the game. Latency, Ticks and all server side processes can be improved if dedicated servers are installed.

MAG had an interesting concept, but the execution was all wrong. Mostly because having such huge amounts of players resulted in huge maps which is a huge pain because there are huge running times.

I would love to see this happen in some sort of games, I hope Watch Dogs brings some massive online mode for instance because that city is just gigantic, only thing I hope that comes with the PS4 multiplayer is a massive delivery of multiplayer games with the open world feature in it, similar to what happened in red dead redemption online mode, but with a bigger player base.

yes, battlefield will have 64 players plus 2 commanders :D

Or so i have head, but is it for all the game modes that are available, or will it be in just a few specific ones? How big will be the maps this time and how many vehicles at once? I need my dogfighting dose!

For sure! There has already been confirmed 60+ players at once in Battlefield 4 servers, and Titanfall and Killzone plan to take advantage of higher player cap on servers last I heard. I know GTA V only plans on allowing 16 players per server, but I think that's more than enough to be able to reak some havoc in Los Santos again haha. Like bknight I also hope that Watch Dogs does something big and creative with their multiplayer mode.. but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

That sounds awesome, and is great to hear! Battlefield already makes great use of teamwork and vehicles and things like that, so doing it with 60+ players on the map at once should be amazing!

I think that there's a different issue when it comes to online play. That's infrastructure. I think that modern games can push the boundaries of holding onto 128 players at a time. The problem you run into is bottle necks on servers and bottle necks on home ISP's and bandwidth caps. The PS 4 itself is entirely capable of hosting data and rendering that data. I'm sure that it could probably break the 128 player marker even. Its the other bottle necks you have to think about.

Titanfall is xbox one exclusive and the reason is because xbox one has the cloud, wich offers dedicated servers so ps4 might not be able to get as high as xbox one in players... If not sony has its own dedicated servers for ps4 coming in the near future... Think of the current gen... 12 players or whatever on black ops 2 makes the game lags sometimes...reason? People go online with shitty bandwidhs...and we all know that all games are player hosted (almost all games)...this means that all internet is taken from one player...If COD:Ghost would have the same system but with...lets say 32 player that wouldn´t be good at all...lets hope sony has an answer to this or else xbox one as a very big advantage :/

I think the technology is either limited, or there are problems with patents that prevent the technology from being used. It's like how cellphone companies are limiting data or how ISPs are charging outrageous prices for the speeds we're seeing. I think the gaming industry is just at a loss because they're so dependent on what is currently allowed by these telecom companies. So do I think these new title games will be able to support tons of players? Yes. But will it? Not until we see some kind of progress with the telecom companies.

I think that there will be some games that will support a lot of players. While there will be some games that will not support as many.
I really think it depends on the game as there are some games that are pretty much made for low amount of players per host/server. While there are games that are made to have a lot of players.

It really depends on the type of game. It is not that important to have large amounts of players in online matches for me. I think it will depend on the game developer the most though. After all they will be making the coding for the game so if they want bigger matches then they will add it in. But the amount of players they have now is fine, so they won't change it. After all loads of people = bigger maps. Do they want to make massive maps? Maybe not.

Well, with games like Planetside 2 coming to the PS4, I wouldn't be surprised if they did start supporting bigger player bases. The console definitely has the power to handle it, but it's up to the developers to make it happen. I'm definitely hoping for this kind of thing, but I'm also reminded of MAG. That game didn't do too well despite being pretty good, so I guess it just depends on the audience and how they take it, because there needs to be a demand for this type of game on consoles as well.

As Stoudman stated, the full online support with more players on PS4 shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone since it has more power than the current gen consoles.

Unless it comes pre-packaged with better ISP/Bandwidth I doubt it. While the systems may be in place on the side of the company - it's going to be held back on the side of the player(s). It's probably just as well - the worse part of multiplayer is the other players afterall.

Yeah I think it definitely will be able to. Only because I am sure they are expecting it because of all the MMO(RPG) type games that are indeed coming out for the PS4.
