What should happen when you die?

In most MMOs I play when you die, something is taken off you like gold or a debuff is applied to your character as a sort of death penalty. What do you think should happen when you die in TESO?

I hope not that. I hate when my stuff gets gone when I die. Especially when you have to trek back to your body to find it, that usually turns me off eventually from playing. I don't mind a plenty though since most games do something like that, but the extreme plentys that MMOs like to give are ridiculous and if we're lucky won't be in TESO.

I hope those kinds of penalties aren't in game. A tunare penalty makes sense, but taking armor and rares? I'm not feeling that much.

I believe whatever is equipped shouldn't be removed as a penalty, but a chunk of gold and other items makes sense. It would encourage storing your items regularly as opposed to just carting it around with you during dangerous grinding and raids (as opposed to essentials).

But which items would you lose? Certainly sometimes you can spend a great deal of time trying to get a certain item like an enchanted sword, and then becomes your baby. It would be kind of unfair to remove that. Maybe item could have a "tier level" say from 1-9 and when you die you lose 50% of your tier 1-3 items.

When it comes to items, I believe some should be a tagged to prevent losing them upon death. When it comes to armor or a general weapon, that stays. An enchanted weapon or jewelry, you should tag that to prevent losing it, but you should be able to tag one or two items to really make you think about what is valuable and what you should store in the bank or your residence (if there is one. I hope there will be).

To me a debuff would be reasonable

Oooh, I like the idea of a debuff. Hobble a class or race's attributes for a period of time. That works for me.

I can get behind a debuff. That works for me. Maybe bleed damage/broken bone damage depending on what weapon or kind of appendage was used.

On losing items upon death, I believe there should be a safety level cap where you can die and keep your weapons. Once you're past that cap, you're considered skilled enough to hold on to your weapons and manage your inventory. I agree with tagging some items.

I would agree with worn items taking some wear and tear damage as well upon death and only being able to repair it up until a certain amount for a duration of time. If there can be debuffs, lingering damage, and weapon damage I'd throw losing items out the window.

Soul gems are used to revive and heal other players in PvP so I feel that losing some of them could be a suitable death penalty.

I don't know. If TES is set at a time when soul gems are rare and just becoming a thing in Tamriel I could see that being a decent death penalty. If you can go and purchase them in stores whenever, not so much.

It does all depend on the rarity of them I suppose as well as how effective they will be in this era of Tamriel... among other factors... But I could get behind a revival penalty as a death penalty.

They could probably determine the penalty by class--which would be a bit complex since it would need to be even for everyone.

Now that would be difficult because like you said, you'd want the penalty to be even for all classes. Debuffs on skills important to that class or class family would work.

Yeah I was thinking something like a losing an amount of gold for melees, some sort of weapon and armor damage for tanks, and soul gem loss for casters. Ultimately though, I think a debuff on key skills for an amount of time seems fair for all classes. Good call by Dark Septagon.

I'm not sure if I'll even be picking up TESO off the jump (have to see how everyone else takes to it after all the type that was Star Wars: TOR, but that penalty seems a little difficult to manage. I predict them going to something a little easier for players to deal with after complaints about losing items and the like since it would have to be proportional for all classes.

You should totally start from scratch! Or least like level 5 each time you die and the game should remove your gear each time! I also think you should spawn next to a hostile a level or so higher in a random spot!!! YEAH!!!

I don't think you'll lose your stuff when you die. I just can't see that happening. I have a feeling that Bethesda knows that they are turning some people off about this game. There are also some rumors about the game that have not been proven 100% truth, although I'm sure many of them are. I'm assuming that they are learning what people who play mmo's expect.

I don't see players losing stuff, but there should be some penalty. MMORPGs aren't generally known for hand holding through play. I agree with debuffs for a period after deaths and stacked debuffs if someone dies again shortly afterwards.
