2.3 Million People Still Waiting For A PS4 According To GameStop

After selling out all their PS4's, GameStop says there's 2.3 million more waiting in line to get one. This is great news for all, I think, as more people buying the console will entice more developers to work on this system and we can probably expect a lot more games coming out hopefully in a more timely manner. What do you guys think?

GameStop: PS4 Demand to Outstrip Supply “For Months”, 2.3 Million People on PS4′s First to Know List

In addition to selling through all of our reservations, and some additional allocation that we’ve received from Sony, we still have over 2.3 million customers on the First to Know list, which indicates continued demand for months to come.

Also, a survey of our Power-Up Reward members shows that 2/3 of those surveyed expect to own a PS4 or Xbox One in the next 12 months. According to our Power-Up Rewards customers, the #1 concern around the console launch is affordability.

While they wouldn’t release specific PS4 numbers due to competitive reasons, Tony later added:

Our share was higher than on any previous console launch, and our sell-through since launch was 80% higher than the total amount of PS3′s that we sold in our 2006 fiscal year.

That's great news! Like you said, this could mean more developers will jump on board and put out more titles. That said, I would figure that affordability would be at the top of the list for launch concerns with availability being very close.

Wow, Playstation4 is without any doubts selling more than I initially though because I thought people (like me), were going to wait until the price drops.
It's good, because there's probably going to be more and better games coming in the near future! :p

I may be wrong, but isn't that just an alert rather than a pre-order? I know a lot of people will be interested in its availability regardless of whether they can afford it or not, and there will be people that think they can get it but realise that they can't (for whatever reason).

It's a very impressive count, and definitely shows promise for the PS4, but it's not a concrete figure (again, I may be wrong, we don't have GameStop over here and I don't know what this First to Know list is).

This is great news! Not great news for those without a PS4 but in the end it'll be worth it. Kinks will be worked out, new games, new updates and features... oh yaa

Well even if its just an alert those numbers are still beyond impressive. 2.3 million is a flat out insane number of people and frankly, a bit unbelievable. I was under the impression that a lot of people were waiting for a price drop before purchasing it. Maybe some of those 2.3 million are in that boat.

I know I'm in that boat, waiting on price drop, waiting on kinks to be worked out and more games to come out. :D

Awesome to see how well the PS4 is selling so far. I'm anxious to see what the numbers are for the Xbox One. I anticipate them to be much lower than the PS4. In the 350-500k range worldwide for the launch.

I seriously had no idea Xbox One came out today; and I keep up with all the latest in gaming. Maybe I just spaced it but no one seems to be saying anything on facebook and I have over 600 friends and at least 85% of them are gaming fans.

I knew the Xbox One released today, but I was more occupied with waiting for A Link Between Worlds.

@Plunkd I expect higher than that since they're going for a worldwide release. Anything less than 1 million would be salty. Anything less than 1 million in the US--Xbox's key location--would be very salty.

I may be wrong, but isn't that just an alert rather than a pre-order? I know a lot of people will be interested in its availability regardless of whether they can afford it or not, and there will be people that think they can get it but realise that they can't (for whatever reason).

It's an alert and pretty much just measures the interest. If it was 2.3 million in preorders that's like...producing units way under expectations.

A Link Between Worlds is amazing but I'm playing Mario 3D World which is equally as awesome so I'm pretty cool about not having a PS4. And yeah the system is an alert and we all know that Sony didn't produce enough consoles on purpose so that they could create the demand. All these companies do, the problem is gamers and casuals who don't make the effort to look elsewhere for the console. I think we've said this on the board multiple times, PS4's are available if you pay attention.

That's a lot of demand for not much supply. Good for the market, bad for the consumer. I really feel for those still waiting, though all my friends seem to have gotten theirs in time.

What a seriously huge number though. Sales through the roof, and we're not even at Christmas yet...

As long as it's out and the kinks are worked out by Christmas or so, I'm happy. My birthday is in January, and I want to buy one of those for a present to myself

Great news. It's good for everyone because it means more games and more people playing the multiplayers.
I just hope everyone gets their PS4 before Christmas.

People need to calm down, since this number should be lower. I can understand though that a lot of these people are probably casual gamers who don't know the tricks to getting your console on release. Unfortunately a lot of these people aren't going to get the PS4 when the alerts come out because there is no way that Sony is going to ship out enough consoles to cover the demand.
