What are the weirdest rumors you heard about the PS3 before its release?

With the PS4 being released fairly soon, I've noticed that there are a lot of rumors circulating around about its features. What kinds of rumors did you guys hear about the PS3 before its release? I can't think of any particularly strange ones, but one thing I did hear was that you'd be able to burn games onto the hard drive and play them directly off of it without a disc. I heard a similar thing with the Xbox 360, but that was only partially true since it requires the disc to play from the hard drive. Otherwise, people would be able to rent/borrow games and then keep them forever on the hard drive.

Funny, i heard something like that.
It has been told to me that the whole console would function like a PC, so you only used the disk to install the game, then you could store the disk anywhere you liked. It kinda works like that, maybe a mix of digital and retail versions.

A lot of the rumors I heard weren't made up, but were based on misunderstandings. The ability to install a game to the hard drive doesn't mean you don't need the disc to play the game, for example. I heard some things about the shape and size of the PS3, but nothing too interesting, and they obviously didn't end up being true anyway.

Well remember the first design for the controller? That thing was a trainwreck! Not so much a rumor but still. To be honest, it looked promising but I'm glad they stayed with the simple design.

Not much really sticks out in my memory, as I assume I just dismissed most of what I've heard prior to E3 since they were only mostly rumors. I've seen a lot of mock ups of how the PS4 could look though, and these were what really caught my attention as some of them looked really good. I even probably favor some of the fan made designs more, but I'm not too disappointed with how the real PS4 design turned out overall.

Definitely the controller. This was perceived as one of the few shortcomings of the PS4 early in development, although it is always wise to not trust rumors.

I tend to drown out rumors that seem to be a little far-fetched or out of sync with what is known about the consoles so far, but back in the day, I probably took a few rumors to heart including that the PS3 would incorporate new buttons on both handles and things of this nature. When I look back, it was quite foolish to believe some of what was spouted, but understandably so. No one but those intimately bound with the development centers really know what is and isn't in the works as well as what is and isn't possible for a system they will pay to be manufactured millions of times.

I've played the rumor game a lot just from reading whatever blog catches my fancy at the time. That being said the rumors I've read aren't all that weird as far as the PS 4 is concerned. There's a lot of talk about specs, over clocking, games and the normal things you'd expect with an upcoming console. The one thing I haven't seen much of is DRM and privacy concerns as compared to the Xbox One. This is awesome for the PS 4's consumer base because its cheaper and has a bit less controversy behind it.

Oh yeah...the boomerang? That was a weird one. I honestly thought that was going to be it for a while. I'm a little disappointed, though, because I thought it was very distinct, if not impractical.

I think my favorite was the one where in you could burn movies or download them onto your system. That said I agree that the first controller was something of a major mess.

One of the rumors I heard that is the Xbox 360 has better components but then i found out, it was made with old technology and i'm like pshh... ps3 has a blu-ray player + more.

The rumor that I heard about the most, and it is similar with the Xbox was the installing games to hard drive. When I had first heard that I assumed I was going to be able to take one of my friends games and install it then give it back to him.

Someone told me the PS3 would totally be able to play PS1 games and even use Game shark. I was excited. :'( No game shark or ps1 discs. Though I love downloading ps1 games.

Ha. I thought I was the only one taken in by that. I was already taking out my old PS1 CDs in anticipation of that. In hindsight, it was probably quite foolish to believe that. :p
