Should Nintendo just throw in the towel?

Fiverr Exposed

I used to be so pro-Nintendo back in the day. Never thought I would own a Sony or Xbox, until I decided back in 2008 to get a PS3, mainly because of the ability to play Blu-ray movies, and I could finally consolidate my entertainment systems into one unit.

Everyone knows that the Mario/Zelda/Metroid franchises are gold, but maybe it's time to take them away from lackluster Nintendo and give them to the masses. I would love to see Zelda on the PS! I guess it would be the PS4, but if it did come out for it, I would seriously think about upgrading. Right now I just don't see the need to do that. Anyone else wanna see Nintendo just give it up and jump on the Sega bandwagon?

The Wii is still the console with the most install base and although the Wii U isn't doing so good, it's not doing too bad either. The problem Nintendo have right now is the lack of 3rd party games support. Their focus on motion controls rather than hardware performance is in my opinion a mistake. Anyway, games like Mario and Zelda are first party system sellers so there's no reason Nintendo should ditch the console business.

Nintendo should just give up. If they can't make a next-generation system then why the hell are they even trying? I love Nintendo but if they can't step it up, then what is the point of their systems? I'm sorry to say, I started gaming via NES so it saddens me to see this and to even talk like this about a company who got me into gaming.

That's one thing I don't understand either. Why make games with these kiddie graphics? Why didn't they understand that us gamers grew up with Nintendo and the first NES, so make the graphics and play grow with US. You know, the consumer. Never thought I would feel this way about them, but until they grow up, I'm on the Sony bandwagon.

I agree, Nintendo is where I spent 100 hours playing Super Mario, even though I started gaming via the Atari at a super young age, I still do remember that system. My mother used to actually play games on the nintendo and the sega with me. Mortal Kombat vs your mom is the most epic thing a little kid can do. :P

Nintendo's core audience is casual gamers that's why. It's been their business model for the longest time. Their motion control thing is designed to let kids play in mind. Sony and Microsoft in their eye own the hardcore gamer market, that's why they focus on casual games.

I believe someone here has already mentioned 3rd party developers. Early on in the Wii U life span, they lost said support and that means they kind of are relying on lower and support and much bigger titles to allow them to survive. Plus the Wii market generally isn't games people are over--major into. I mean a lot of the games are designed towards the casual gamer who isn't too picky. I mean fantasy and RPG are the main games that come to mind when thinking of the Wii U. I don't think Nintendo should throw in the towel but they should expand to other consoles as well as supporting there own. I mean why can't they port games that a Wii exclusive to other consoles and that way reach a more stable market so they might be able to release more games.

I guess they figure that exclusives would make some people wanna buy the console, but why should I spend $60 on a game, then $200 for a system to play it on, when I know I'm not gonna like any of the other titles on that system? It's like the recording industry trying to force you to buy a whole album just to listen to one song. Man please. No one has time for that.

Sounds like a lot of drinking of the Pachter koolaid with a side of Doomsaying Lunchables in here about Nintendo. Just because they don't make a lot of titles with blood, violence, and swearing or aggressively push those doesn't mean they should throw in the towel. They've been through consoles that didn't sale well. As a matter of fact, the last five generations only saw two Nintendo consoles not succeed at PlayStation levels for those generations.

It's actually odd that people jump on board the whole "Ninty should make games not console" thing when they were the only company that made money off their console last generation (360 was largely covered by money MS got from Android and PS3 was largely covered by Sony's insurance business).

And even if Nintendo left consoles (highly unlikely), they would still run their titles on handheld which are printing money. It's basically why their investors (while concerned) haven't raised the issue of splitting assets (like the investor with Sony did last summer) so that different parts of Sony can actually stand on their own legs or sink.

Trust me they never will.

The Wii U hasn't been doing that well, but by all accounts the company as a whole is doing pretty good!

The DS has been a huge success for them.

Just look at their share prices over the last 3 years. Generally on the up! Always a good sign.

Huge surge today with the news that China are lifting the ban on consoles.

Nintendo still do really well in Asia. Probably better than they do anywhere else as far as I know ...

I gotta agree with this. The silly graphics that Nintendo has is simply perfect for the Chinese market. This might be one of the best things that could give a big boost to the overall industry as a whole.

Does anyone know why they banned consoles to begin with?

From Kotaku (A very reliable source)

"Consoles have been banned in China since the year 2000," Lisa Hanson from market researcher Niko Partners tells Kotaku. "The government thought that was the best way to protect Chinese youth from wasting their minds on video games, after a parental outcry." The following year, online gaming exploded, and the market size hit $100 million. So the ban, Hanson says, "didn't stop the 'problem'."

Nintendo ain't dying, so no. Wii U is just having a rough time because they were dumb enough to release it without a good game catalog.

I do not think they should give up but they should definitely rethink some of what they're doing, I mean motion controls are fine for certain games but not always the best. Also with the Wii U I think they kind of messed up and it was probably their biggest mistake in quite a while though it could have been worse. I say just give it a year or so and everything should go back to normal with the console struggles.

Wii U's launch line up was beefier than PS4 and Xbox One's, more variety. It wasn't good, but I preferred it more. Where Nintendo was really dumb at--and they made the same mistake with 3DS early on--was saying they'd hold back their 1st party titles and give 3rd party a chance to get their stuff out. There were also delays of course.

Not yet, I think Nintendo rules the portables. They've seen better days, but I don't think they're done yet. They've still got some solid titles that people aren't done with yet.

Anybody that thinks Nintendo is in trouble needs to give their head a shake. Granted the Wii U is not doing the best it dose not mean it is a bad system. I bought one for my youngest and he loves it. would he love it if he was a teenager? probably not, but that's not the market Nintendo is after. That being said with Nintendo owning the hand held market Nintendo is far from being in trouble. Between the 3DS,Wii U,Wii and DS Nintendo sold 1,427,972 units. PlayStation4,3 vita and PSP came in second with a total of 1,329,927 and Xbox last with a total of 715,357 between the Xbox One and 360. Add to the that the fact 3 of the top selling games of 2013 were Nintendo exclusives. # 4, Pokemon X&Y #7, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and #9, Monster Hunter IV. The WiiU has been bashed since day one and for the most part unfairly. If you have tried the system and think it sucks that's fine. On the other hand if you haven't tried it don't believe everything you read, if you do you will be missing out.

True, it was beefier than the competition but still lacking. Also, yeah it was dumb of them to think the 3rd parties would keep it afloat with the comparatively tiny install base.

Do you think they were genuinely trying to give the third parties a piece of the pie by letting them get their money first? Do you think there may have been complaints from them about their titles being overshadowed by the 1st party titles?

Genuine questions, not being sarcastic.
