In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original release of Tetris in 1984, Ubisoft and The Tetris Company have announced that Tetris will be coming to the Xbox One and PS4 via digital channels.

Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot had this to say about Ubisoft's involvement with the historic franchise:
"We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans."

Here's some great news for all of you Tetris fans! Though no release date has been set, people are guessing that the game will release sometime this year to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the game. Just what I need. A new Tetris game. When this came out on the original Game Boy I played it to the point that I was dreaming about it. This will take over my LIFE...

I've only played 'Columns' on a console. I think that was on the Sega Mega Drive.

The only time i've played tetris is when i haven't got a lot on at work, and i'm killing time. :D

Nice addition, but not for me.

Then it'd better be cheap because the number of Tetris games out there are mindblowing. I'd be interested in what kind of Tetris they do though, since their studiosare talented enoughto put a spin on it. And it'd better be cheap because I can play Tetris for free right now if I wanted to.

I agree that it should be an inexpensive title, as I can't imagine anyone paying more than $15 US max to play it. Even at $15 I would probably be hard pressed to buy it. Probably $10 would be the max that I'd be interested in paying unless it brought something awesome and big to the new game.

Unless they change it up the way they did with Dr. Mario why in the world would I pay more than $2.00 for Tetris. Like baracksyndel said, you can play it for free on your PC right now. Or I can go to my phone and play it for $.99 or my ereader. Tetris is everywhere and it's cheap as anything and I can't see Ubisoft being blind to that fact.

As much as I love Tetris, this game shouldn't be on consoles, especially this generation. They should be making games fit for the console's capabilities but Tetris, come on! Unless they are selling it cheap I'm not going to get it. Angry Birds is already the biggest rip off.

Where can't you find Tetris? I don't understand why this is such a big announcement because it's Tetris. Who hasn't played Tetris, who doesn't have it on their phone or whatever handheld device that you like to use. I could play it right now for free. We're long past the days where Tetris was cool to have on the console. Unless Ubisoft is changing things up, it's just another thing to keep up distracted until the major releases come out.

I played Tetris last night on my Gameboy -ah the memories. BUT are PS4 owners so desperate for games they'll pay $50 for Angry Birds? Or whatever price for Tetris?

I remember I had one game on the PC-Engine for nearly 6 months before I got a new one. And I didn't complain :P

Tetris was one of the first games that I ever owned when my parents got me the original Gameboy way back in the day. It blew my mind and I played it for hours. But I'm not sure what exactly Ubisoft can bring to it that would make us play for a game that almost every two bit company releases. If I went on my phone right now and searched I could probably find over 1,000 versions of Tetris.

Same here. If its good, I'll get it on a console but I still have my original GameBoy Tetris cartridge in my launch model GameBoy Color sitting on my coffee table that I fire up when Sony or a game makes me update. Its a solid 10 minutes I can get some Tetris action in :)

I have a feeling Ubisoft has something planned for Tetris 2014. A story mode, DLC packs, cutscenes, something major for there to be an actual announcement. If not, this could've just been released on consoles and left at that.

My wife loves tretris and I love it too, though I love the phone app Tetris Blitz more than anything. There better be awesome HD graphics and tons of ways to score points and not just the classic Tetris. Seriously, give us 100x more variety or else it'd just not be worth it at all.

I've never been that big of a fan of Tetris, but having seen a documentary about it recently surely gave me a new sense of respect for the game itself and the community of gamers that focus on it solely. I have to agree with most of the comments here that it probably won't have much use on a console, but I think it's just being released more as a novelty just to celebrate the milestone. I'm actually glad that simple / classic games like these are still being paid attention to in the new consoles for some reason, like the Sega classics compilation, for example.
