PS Plus subscriptions have tripled since PS4′s launch

PlayStation Plus subscriptions have tripled since PS4 launched, according to Sony’s UK boss Fergal Gara.

The news came out of a PS Vita Slim reveal event in London yesterday. Sony’s new handheld will launch in the UK on February 7

Granted; you need a PS Plus subscription to play PS4 games online, but the uptake of subs surely means big financial returns for Sony moving forward.

No surprise really. I wonder if Xbox Live subs have increased since the launch of the Xbox One?

Well PS+ does deliver the goods with those free games. That's the main thing reeling people in--that and they offered a free sample on launch.

That and PS+ doesn't cost much. Like you don't have even really have to shop around for it per month (although you can find some good deals on it per year).

Good point, I go monthly and PS+ hasn't hurt my wallet. I could go annual and be okay actually.

My brother actually sold me on PS+ on the price alone, so that's a valid point. Like I didn't see a purpose for it even with free games available, but the price was wallet friendly and I go month by month.

Honestly all you have to do is look at what PS+ is offering, look at what Live Gold is offering and unless multiplayer online is just your bread and butter, PS+ is the best bet.

Maybe it's because of the free one month trial included with every purchase of the PS4. Will have to wait longer after all the trials are expired to see the true figure of PS Plus subscribers. Not really doubting with the free games and other free stuff offered, it's really value for money.

Good point. I think it will still definitely increase significantly this time though, since this generation's consoles are made specifically with the online market in mind unlike the previous ones wherein it was "just another feature". Either way, I hope they continue with their good track record once they start gaining more audience, and I am optimistic that they will.

I'm sure the majority of these trials will convert to full anyway, due to the quality (especially if you own the 3 current systems) and being requred for online MP on PS4.

I'd imagine xbox live subscriptions didn't go up much as they don't offer as good games, and everyone who wanted to play online on PS4 had to get PS+, while everyone who wanted to play online on XB1 already had xbox live from 360.

I had to spend $100 for their "family plan" in order to get my 3 xbox 360's online. Now I will be trading them in and buying a PS3 and a Vita for my kids, while only spending $50 to get all 3 online. It's a way better deal, and my kids will have TONS OF FREE games to play. It's a win / win for me!

I think Sony made a really good move with enabling all devices with only one subscription. All the accounts on my PS4 can play online, I can use my Plus subscription on both my PS3 and PS4 which means I can download many free games each month. It is indeed a real bargain, much better than Live Gold. I'm going to go Plus too after my two months trial is up.

It doesn't surprise me at all. I just saw that PS Plus subscribers make up more than half of the PS4s users. Again, no surprise.

"All the 4.2 million PS4s that have already moved into the hands of consumers, more than half of the people that have now gotten their hands [on] the PS4 have actually signed up for PS Plus service, which bodes very well for us," said Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai in a conference call, according to a transcript from Seeking Alpha.

They don't say whether the numbers include the free 30 day trial that come with a new system though. Numbers can always be skewed to be biased towards whatever they are trying to report.

This is pretty much the main reason. I'm sure it still would have spiked a bit if it weren't mandatory for online play, but not nearly this much.

Sucks that we don't have free online any more, but PS+ is far more than just online play, so the fee isn't all that bad, IMO.

There are some games that you don't have to have PS+ to play online with.

That's a relief too. It wouldn't have been awful since the price isn't bad, but having some games not require PS+ is a huge plus.
