Most Generic Games

I remember most games I played on the PS1 were hardly generic, since everything was so fresh and new at the time, and I suspect developers were a little more experimental back then since the technology was fairly new and there weren't many set standards yet. That said, looking back now, I'd say the most generic games I played on it were probably the racing and sports games. I played NFS for PS1 just recently, and I was a bit bored by it because it's just regular racing without all the bells and whistles that modern games now have.

Oh sports games are hyper generic. EA made its bones on those given that they didn't need to put much into them and couple put them out quickly. Like take a good look at the 90s. If I did NFL 1996, I could release 1997 as the exact same game with an updated roster. It wasn't until PS2 that developers had to put effort into sports games, but even then there's only so much you're going to be able to do.

If I had a studio I'd throw out sports games: Pro Dodgeball 2015 and so on while working on an actual game. Sports games serve as a distraction to the game with a real story and gameplay mechanics.

Sports games back in the 90s didn't need much to be done to them. Every other year you add a mode, legends, and special roster and every year you just update the roster. EA and other sports games developers had to stop phoning it in when online updates became a thing.

On the note of Crash's studio, can we have Street Gymnastics 2015?

It most likely is what you're thinking of: doing flips off of cars, off the monkey bars on playgrounds, off bleachers, and the line backflips.

Well, sports game are pretty generic, I mean every installment is just the previous game with updated graphics and a bigger roster, and quite possibly a few modes added. Shooters are also pretty generic, most of them are just COD copies with a different game texture. But for the most part, PS1 has a lot of unique and interesting game, because of its pioneering maybe, but still the variety is too wide that some of them are just rehash of another popular game.

Beyond the Beyond was the very definition of generic jrpg. It gets a lot of flak but in truth it was a very early psx title and most its defenders will tell you "It really wasn't that bad!". Yeah, it was just horribly generic, PAINFULLY generic. Beyond the Beyond was every mediocre 16 bit rpg rolled into one, with little to no innovation, the most generic of stories, the most generic of graphics for a 2d game and its only saving grace is the soundtrack by Motoi Sakaruba. Even by Motoi's standards the soundtrack itself is kinda generic too but I love his stuff and he's one of my favorite video game composers that isn't terribly well known. He did the music for Star Ocean, most of the Tales games, Golden sun and so on.

But to truly understand how generic BtB is, you have to look and watch lets play videos.

If any part of you is thinking this looks fun or engaging, just play any snes rpg because chances are said rpg will be less generic and far more engaging than BtB. Same goes for the genesis. I have played rpgmaker games with ripped off sprites and tilesets and midi music from vgmusic archive that had more spirit than this game. It is not horrible but I think that makes it worse, somehow. To this game's credit I will say that some of the summon spells look cool.

There's nothing more generic than stacking a bunch of endless falling cubes together to earn points. Yes, talking about Tetris. The PS1 has seen some of them. Magical Tetris Challenge? Tetris Plus? The Next Tetris? Puhleeese. How many Tetris games do we need to have?

Sports games generally stay the same. They can change a few graphics and players but basically it is the same generic stuff over and over.

The thing with changing the players and rosters though is that all of that can be done via downloadable updates (and for free). Like the last time it actually warranted a new game every year was the PS1, N64, Saturn-era prior to online connectivity becoming a thing. With graphics, sometimes it's a significant update and other times you can't tell. People will say "Oh the graphics have been improved" because it's on a more current console or it's further down the line when other games that have graphics updates from title to title can be noticed.

I used to love playing sports games but finally got sick of them being so generic and boring. Same thing from sport to sport, game to game.
