Are You In Favor Of Playstation's Paywall?

I've never been able to try out MS's paywall for online usage, but from what I've been reading online, it seems as though that the common consensus is that PS+ is miles ahead of MS's and that it's entirely worth it. On the other hand, there are those that maintain that online multiplayer should remain free regardless, which is the part I don't get. I am in favor of the online fees, given that they do in fact give you value for your money anyway, and I feel that payment is a necessity for the service to evolve and develop, much like the way taxes build better roads and maintain them, to keep us safe through police, fire dept, etc. Is there something I'm not getting here? What do you think of the new paywall?

The whole having to be a PS Plus member to play online via the PS4 does not bother me in the slightest. I cannot speak highly enough about Playstation Plus. It is a fantastic service and one that just keeps giving. I mean, next month here in EU we get Saints Row the Third, Battlefield 3 and Payday The Heist for free! Does it get any better then that?! I know you have to keep being a member to play those free games but I don't see myself ever not being a PS Plus Subscriber.

As for XBL, I will admit it is a great service to play online and chat with friends. But that's it. People say XBL is a much better service then PSN. I disagree. PSN can match XBL and because of PS Plus - greatly exceeds it. But hey, each to their own. Plus, PS Store has had some fantastic discounts even when you're not a PS Plus subscriber.

Bottom line is, with the offers and rewards you get with PS Plus, I don't think anybody should complain much. I mean, the first week of PS Plus on the PS4 we get DriveClub! (albeit a stripped down version) but still. And... it's only $5 a month

I'll have to disagree on this one. I already pay for my internet connection. I don't want to pay again just to play online. It's like double taxation which is of course not good. I know that the PS+ would offer a lot of great features and stuff. Maybe, I would be willing to pay a one-time fee to play online but not a recurring fee of 5 dollars per month.

I'm pretty sure it will be like it is now - having the option of paying for 3 months or a year. At least I hope so.

I'm not opposed to it. I mean to be honest everyone should have PS Plus by now. The deal is just so great that I don't see how anyone could pass it up. Also, unlike Microsoft, the only thing behind a pay wall is multiplayer. Everything else such as Netflix and Hulu will still be free. Also it is still relatively cheap anyway. You have to remember that Sony does need some type of income to support the PlayStation Network so I'm not angry at them for charging for multiplayer. They have to make money somehow.

The only thing I don't like is them suddenly requiring it when it wasn't required in the past. I'm definitely biased because I don't play PS games online, but I think that the other perks make the subscription worthwhile. That said, I still really appreciate the fact that a PS+ subscription isn't (and won't be) required to use apps like Netflix, since any fees they charge are on top of what you pay already.

In my opinion, i think it's a bad move by Sony to jump from free online to paying online, but hey, free games and other discounts, so i can't complain much. Also, all that Cloud Service won't pay itself, so they would need to take the money from somewhere.

I've been seeing this particular argument a lot, but I have a little trouble understanding it. Don't get me wrong, I'd most definitely prefer free service, but aren't we supposedly paying to play on their servers though? I don't know if I'm just not getting this, but I don't see why they shouldn't charge consumers for using their service just because we already pay for internet. I would liken that to refusing to pay for batteries because you already bought a battery-operated toy. Like I said, I'm just trying to understand so hopefully someone could clear this up.

I greatly agree with you. I was in awe when PS3 came out and online play was free. That was a lot of money Sony lost in order to keep its customers happy. Though, of course I'd rather it be free, it absolutely doesn't surprise me that it's not, and I have absolutely no bothers with paying for it. Especially since I own an XBox right now, so I would be paying regardless.

Since PlayStation + already has a lot of other benefits, it doesn't really bother me that they're charging for it. I personally prefer to play online multiplayer on the Xbox 360, and this way I won't really feel guilty about choosing the more costly option over the free one. I've had a poor experience with PlayStation online multiplayer, though, so I'm quite biased.
