Six months in

I just wanted to take a few minutes to vent my disappointment in the ps4 having had it six months.

I had a ps 1, 2 & 3 and loved them all but I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of the 4. I am a fairly casual gamer, I only really play COD, occasionally Fifa. When the ps4 came out I bought it with these two games straight away.

I'll talk about the games first. I disliked ghosts from the minute I started playing. It just bores me constantly being killed by campers. I always play objective based games and this never happend as much on previous games. Can't believe they didn't include demolition, my favourite game mode. IMO there is not one single improvement in this game than in any other COD. I bought the season pass because I hated the standard maps so much and assumed this would be a one off. Then they release different weapons, camos and game audio that are extra. It just leaves me feeling like I'm being extorted, they're always getting the arm in. I still play it occasionally but usually get bored after 1/2 games and switch off. I used to do all nighters on MW regularly!

As far as fifa goes I only really play with friends when they come round so you can imagine my horror when I realised they removed same console coop. Like wtf, why deliberately make the game less fun? As soon as I saw this I sold it straight away.

That sort of sums up my ps4 experience so far. I just get the feeling I've been cheated. It feels like I'm always being asked to pay more money for a lesser experience than I enjoyed on the ps3. Not to mention the silly things like audio still coming through my tv when I've selected optical and no 3D support. I expected a lot more than this. I find the analogue sticks uncomfortable and the share function totally useless. I never have or will use it.

I know nothing about the hardware side of things and I'm sure games will be beautiful in the future but for me the enjoyment of gaming comes from the simple things not just how pretty the graphics are.

Anyway, I had to vent this because none of my friends are on ps4 and its been bugging me for weeks!!!

But all of what you've just said isn't anything to do with the PS4. Ghosts is on PS3 and you get the exact same experiance e.g. game DLC, campers, lack of modes. Basically everything is the same. Fifa again PS3 version is exactly the same.

If you're only in it for two generic games then yes the PS4 would be classed as a waste but its got nothing to do with the PS4 because both games you've mentioned aren't linked to the PS4. So you can't blame the PS4.

Plus Microsoft controls CoD and EA controls FIFA - Two evils.

I would also have buyers remorse on a $400 console if I only played 2 last gen games on it. A casual gamer probably would be happier to stick with a current console than buying a "next gen" before they have to. You should have stuck with the PS3 for a while. The next COD is going to be on it and they will probably still make FIFA games for PS3 5 years from now. Even if COD is your main game, you could have milked the PS3 until at least November 2015 (assuming that COD will be PS4/XB1 only).
I suggest trying to venture out and try new genres before selling it for a loss. There are a lot of Indie games that are all about the simple things and not how pretty the graphics are.

I agree completely, I know I would have been more than happy with the ps3 versions of Cod and FIFA having seen the ps4 versions. I suppose it's still early days but it's just frustrating when I can see the direction we are being taken by Sony and games developers. Everything is going to cost more once you've already paid £55 for a game

From the store I would recommend: Child Of Light, Fez, Transistor and Resogun.

If you like FPS maybe pick up Killzone cheaply as that is bringing co-op modes soon which will be fun.

Get Infamous just for the eye candy!

As @Nackles says try a few different genres as you might find something you absolutely love - I'd never played a MMORPG before but got FF14 after a friend recommended it and wow its a beautiful, huge, vibrant world and great game (not so if you are only very casual though).

How can the analogue sticks be uncomfortable as they are pretty much same as DS3 and most people think the DS4 is a vastly improved design?

Get yourself some online buddies from this forum and I hope you start enjoying your machine more.

If not sell whilst you can get some decent money for it.

You forge your own overall experience. Try some new things.. There are a lot of PS4 games out there for someone who hasn't been playing everything new as it comes out.

The PS4 version of COD feels much better than the PS3 version. Sure the community sucks, but that's not Sony's fault.

If you got a PS4 to just play these two games, you only have yourself to be disappointing in. Pick up something like infamous second son, and it will instantly validate your purchase.

Ok i'm not about to tell you to sell your PS4, but i DO agree with you wholeheartedly that as per the words i've picked out from your 2 posts, the " experience " of next gen gaming, for me too has been uttterly disapointing so far. Frankly i think i should have waited until 2015 before getting my PS4. Like the others have said it's all about the GAMES though not the hardware, and that's where i am disapointed.

Very few, IF ANY, of the next gen games aren giving us "EXPERIENCES" we can't already get on the old gen already. Infamous SS is just like the other infamous's just prettier and a whole lot shorter, but the EXPERIENCE is just the same.

Same goes for Killzone, BF, in fact pretty much EVERYTHING. Even the Indie games are perplexing me. Why is there such a trend at the moment for old 8 bit looking games ? Do you really need a next gen console to play games that looked ripped right out of a SEGA Mega drive system ?

All is NOT lost though. E3 is giving me hope that the EXPERIENCES of the games to come will in fact be different to what we get, so for me right now it's a waiting game, that only until 2015 do i think we'll see games that are truely giving us new next gen experiences. IN the mean time i do think like the others have said you need to expand your boundaries from just COD/Fifa. There is a WHOLE world of wonderful games out there if you've not tried them.

Prettier is what you get with next Gen. What else were you expecting? I can play games on my PS1 that have the same game play experience as PS2, PS3, or PS4 games. Of course the PS4 games look a lot better.

Short version, despite all this vaunted processiing power we now have, games still have the same dumb ai, unreal physics, which all in all just adds up to the the same games wrapped up in new packages. Surely there is more to next gen gaming than just pretty graphics ??? If that's all it's going to be then i can see why people would switch to PC gaming. ( that's a rhetorical statement as i know more better stuff for the PS4 is going to come, but as of right now it's not thrilling me )

In short, i was rightly or wrongly expecting more from the games than just pretty graphics. It's my own fault i suppose if i expected more, but i was lead to believe this from the articles i read from the developers about how they can now do x,y, z better than last gen.

I honestly don't think things have been 'uber' amazing since launch but you expect that when you buy a new console at launch. Take Infamous Second Son - this was a game developed for the PS4 and it looked visually nice and had awesome sound effects and a fairly decent AI.

Most games are still being developed for cross platform and I do believe this is what's been holding us back.

I think late 2014 and into 2015 we'll see amazing games.

I totally understand this. Why invest all the money for a couple of experiences that aren't the greatest. I'm a really big fan of RPGs and JRPGs so the PS is really up my ally. If i had put that money into the system and only liked two games I would probably do the same.

Xbone doesn't seem to have much for me this generation.

I simply don't have the cash to be buying a lot if games at the minute. COD4 was a game changer, not just on the PS3. I think you are right that expecting a revolutionary change can be unrealistic. It is kind of like how the iPhone changed the landscape of cell phones, but now every time a new one comes out people are expecting that same (revolutionary) wow factor and it takes just the right product at just the right time for something like that to really happen.

COD4 showed up right when online multiplayer was taking off and there really wasn't anything like if for console gamers at the time. Also it was released a year after the PS3 came out (and only developed for that gen).

I have a PS4 and PS3, I purchased my PS4 before christmas, simply because I wanted to upgrade. I am a casual gamer atm, but I am impressed with the tech. Sure, some things need changing, but it did with the PS3, It takes time and they improve along the way. I personally miss playing my external hard drive onto my console but I have faith they will release a patch. I like to keep with the times and love the menu interface on the PS4 too.

The COD series in general bores me – as has most of the 'samey' FPS genre over the last five or six years. As I’ve said in the past, they all look the same, feel the same and play the same to me… The tidal-wave of this genre on sale is one of the main reasons why I’ve moved more across to indie games and PC games over the last three years or so. This is down to another point I’ve made only recently – lazy developers and producers. It’s nothing down to the console itself.

I have still to upgrade to a PS4. I'm still happy enough with my PS3 for a number of reasons. Firstly, there’s almost nothing on the 'next gen' consoles in terms of games that takes my fancy at the moment. Infamous Second Son is about the only game that I can truly say I fancy playing (already seen a full walkthrough on YouTube – saves me the money!). From what I’ve seen, I can’t see any real visual improvement. I’m sure it’ll come but as things stand I just can’t see the price tag warranting more of essentially the same. Also as things stand, I don’t have any strong desire to upgrade simply because I don’t have that sort of free time any more. Besides, I’ve not long purchased the PS3 edition of Minecraft which will certainly tide me over for now!

Secondly, there’s no way I’m buying it at the current full list price of £360-odd. I can’t speak for elsewhere in the world, but here in the UK, that only gets you the bare console. If you want anything, even just one game, to actually play on it, you’re talking upwards of £400 still. No thanks. I refuse to pay that sort of money considering I'm now a casual gamer who won't get full use out of all it's features. The price either needs to drop by at least 25% or there needs to be some decent value packages on the market to tempt me. I'm hoping they'll start appearing by late summer, otherwise my 'waiting game' with Sony is set to continue (two can play at that game…).

Also in relation to the second point of not getting the full use of the console – I’m not technically minded. When people go on about specs and seemingly random numbers/letters, it goes right over my head. All I know about any games console is how to turn it on, where the controller plugs into and where the disc slots into. I’m very much a 'plug in and play' gamer. Also, I’m predominately a single-player gamer, which renders the PS4’s vast amount of online features more or less useless to me…

Thirdly, I genuinely don’t have that kind of money hanging around at the moment anyway…! I also have some big bills coming up between now and the end of July, then a holiday to pay for in September and save up some spending money for… So as things stand, I can’t see me being in the market for a PS4 until at least the Autumn – and that’ll only be if pricing is becoming more sensible. If not, oh well, I’ll just wait some more until it does… I felt totally ripped off by being early to buying both the PS2 and PS3. It won’t be happening again.

I guess most games/genres have been done to death and real innovation is quite rare. I think things will improve when the cross gen titles fade away - MGS 5 looks very cool indeed as do The Witcher and Bloodborne.

Yeah this sounds like what OP's gripe is about. There's also free games that don't require PS+ OP, you should try them out. They're not that bad.

Also, sounds like a lot of people are having trouble with the whole new adoption thing. Last gen masterpieces like Mass Effect until 2 years into the next gen era. The only one I really remember that was a good release game was CoD 2. Just gotta be patient. We'll get new experiences coming, we just don't know in what form yet. Seems like next-gen games are trying to facilitate coop gaming with games like AC Unity, FC4, and Destiny.
