Hack And Slash Games

I always favored the hack and slash genre when it comes to 3D games, as it's a very simple type of game and I could just turn my mind off and fight through hordes of enemies with only the goal of getting to a boss. Unfortunately, I've only ever known Devil May Cry and God of War for this type of game, with the exception of a few other minor titles like Marvel Nemesis story mode. I'd like to ask if any of you have any other titles you could recommend for any of the PS systems?

There's Dante's Inferno - which is a carbon copy of God of War but has a good story to back it up. This is a game I really enjoyed and recommend if you like GoW.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden II and III, and Bayonetta are some more popular titles.

Another title that I really enjoyed but is only worth a rental is actually X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Well, you could sink your teeth into the Dynasty Warriors series which I think is a decent hack and slash game that allows you to slay numerous enemies in a historical setting. Also, try to play Diablo for the consoles. It's quite good. The item collection system is so deep that you would play for hours.

I just remembered I've played Dante's Inferno as well and yes it was pretty enjoyable, I agree. Couldn't say much about how memorable it was though, seeing as I've completely forgotten my experience with it now lol. Still, it was a relatively good GOW knock off. I haven't tried any of the other games you mentioned though and I'm particularly curious about the Wolverine game since I've always loved all things X-Men. Also, being reminded of Dante's Inferno reminded me of the 300 game on PSP. I found that to be very fun too and I would recommend it to you guys if you haven't played it yet. It gets repetitive, but I don't mind it too much since I still found it to be fun.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions so far, guys! I'll check out some footage of all your recommendations. Keep them coming though since I'll probably end up getting any titles mentioned here because I really love hack and slash games. Thanks again!

Funny thing about that is Devil May Cry started out as a survival horror game similar to Resident Evil. Something changed midway through production and thus Devil May Cry was created. The series has gone to see great success with many seeing Devil May Cry 3 as the highlight. The series was recently rebooted and while it wasn't as great as the 1st and 3rd games, it was a step in the right direction from the 4th game.

Can't say I disagree with the OP, hack-n-slash has always had a little fun place in my heart. I remember toying with the Onimusha series for the PS2 when I was younger. The style and combat system takes a bit of getting used to (I think they change it up in some games) and there are integral puzzle elements to it, but during combat it's perfect to just shut your mind off and defeat what's in your way. May not be as popular as DMC or GOW, but I enjoyed it for what it was worth.

Dynasty Warriors is the ultimate dumb straight up hack and slash. The early ones on the PS2 were great. The newer ones were just ok. The Ninety-Nine Nights series for the PS3 was a knock off of Dynasty Warriors but you might like it. I believe there were 2 of them.

That's a very interesting back story, I've never heard it before. I love reading and hearing about those, so thanks! I'll look that up. And yeah, I agree that DMC started it all. I suppose in this way Dante's kind of like Hack 'n' Slash's "Mario", and if that's the case then maybe Kratos is "Sonic"?

God of War is definitely the one series that defines hack and slash. They're great games, for sure, but the gameplay is pretty simple. I remember playing the Dante's Inferno demo, but I never played the full game. I tried Devil May Cry (I think it was 3), but it was too difficult for me and I could never finish.
