Yearly releases

We all know them. Madden. NFL. FIFA. Racing games. A hell of a lot of sports games. And then there's the different series like CoD and such. Every year, a new game.

So the question is, if they're so bad and never update anything, why do people keep buying them? Do you buy them? If so, why? Or do you skip a year or two?

I think this year will be the first time I buy a yearly released game with Assassin's Creed Unity. I have no problem with franchises releasing yearly, I just usually don't care about them..

I personally feel that yearly releases doesn't bother me as long as you don't feel like you're being cheated by poor rip offs of a game. Now obviously that's down to personal opinion but even the hate that the AC series gets, I still buy the games and enjoy them. I do think sports games take the mick a bit too much though because releasing a game where it has little changes overall apart from players and team updates could be done in a DLC. However I suppose it keeps things fresh.

It's fine when it's like Assassin's Creed. They have more than one team making games, so they get a lot of development time for each title and make them unique enough. Brotherhood and Revelations helped fund 3, I think, and they were developed simultaneously.

I absolutely hate how sports games do it though. Yearly updates at full price, disgusting.

An idea model for games like Fifa would be to make a game called Fifa and release yearly DLC package at around half the cost of a full game. Its fair, consistent and ultimately means you don't have to loose anything.

That's what I was thinking honestly. I find it okay, or even fine as long as the series is progressing a story somewhat. In AC's case, there's more than one team making games, but even if it was just one team, and they were able to actually update things enough-although it would be tough considering the time constraints that surround making games anyway-as long as they actually bring something new to the story I wouldn't have any problems with it.

That's actually a pretty good idea to be honest. I can't see them going for it mind, but it'd be a good idea since it'd save them time and money. And they would only have to make a new game from scratch any time they felt like they could really push the envelope, you know?

Meh, I don't mind it. For yearly games, I buy them every 2-3 years or so. If they don't change much like CoD, then you're not losing much. I buy the NBA 2K and FIFA games every other year. Probably not gonna buy Hardline since I have BF4. It just gives me more options IMO. AC series is fine though since they have studios working on different games.

I feel it's overkill. But I suppose if they make big money from yearly releases (COD, FIFA, Madden) it ain't going to change.

The only exception though for me is Assassin's Creed. Very much looking forward to Unity.
