System software 2.57 is out

Optional? Since when are these updates optional? Usually it's "optional" but if you don't you can't play online :)

Does anybody know if this will automatically download? I always keep my PS4 in sleep mode when not in use, and I haven't got any prompts yet about a 2.57 update.

The update only fixes some issues about disc reading errors.
If your PS4 is in rest mode and connected to the net, the download will be automatic. Otherwise, you have to get it manually throu the system update.

This is the link, if you want to download it on your PC.

Not a big deal anyway, if your PS4 reads discs correctly, you'll not need this update.

I think sometimes they'll put them out as optional for awhile if its only minor and then eventually it will be put to mandatory by a specific time.

Hmm. Makes sense. But it does seem kinda redundant. Why have it optional for a while until they force you to download it? Guess Sony's done weirder :)

I believe most of them used to be optional to allow users some time to download them at their convenience and then they'd go mandatory by 'X' date and force the user to update. I suppose they did that in order to give people a choice of when to download as some people a system update can take forever if they've got a terrible internet connection.

When you put it in those terms, that does make total sense. Even with a good connection, it seems like an eternity. Though I'm glad it can download updates in rest mode. It's nice to turn it on and be notified it was updated while I was away so I can just get into my game.
