Received ps4 for christmas and when connecting, using hdmi, had sound if connected directly to my tv, but when I tried going through my surround sound system, only got video, no sound. Other devices connected the same way work fine. There is no optical outlet on my console. I think there must be something in the "settings" that I may be missing. I could use some help. Thank you

Sounds like an issue with your sound system. Are you using a receiver? Pics of your setup?
I'd jump into my settings now to check the options for you (I know on PS3 you can select how you want the sound to output because my video goes through HDMI but sound through AV into my surround sound system) but I'm backing up my PS4 at the moment to change out my hard drive and I'll be doing that for the next 6ish hours

Thanks for getting back. Went into "settings" , "audio output" and had two options. 1. a box with (priority) and 3 options linear pcm, dolby, and dts. When I changed to dolby, I got theme music. Checked the video that I was playing, no sound. Went back and chose second box, hdmi output and chose dolby 7.1, once again checked movie, no sound. tried dolby 5.1, no sound. don't know what else to do. Can I change the "priority" to hdmi?

Do you have the HDMI cable plugged directly in the TV or is it in a receiver?

Hmm. Definitely sounds like an issue with getting sound from the home theater system and the receiver is the culprit. Have you fiddled with the sound settings on your receiver? This is where my expertise begins to lack. I don't have much experience with home theater systems. Other thing you can try is using the optical output on the PS4.
I tried playing around with the settings on the surround sound system but didn't spend much time on it, I will have to try again. Can't use the optical outlet as this particular ps4 doesn't have one. Can't understand why a stb and super android box are both connected to the hdmi inputs, and they work fine. Can't give up!

Hmm. Looked it up. Apparently the Slim model doesn't have the optical out port......for some weird reason (mine does
). Hell, they've had one on going back to PS2! Why'd they start now to get rid of it? Either way, fiddle with your settings. I have the feeling it is going to end up being the dumbest thing that's keeping it from working. It usually is Thanks for your info Titan. Here's something weird, a commercial dvd movie plays fine with both sound and video. A game disc (NHL 17) displays video only. Maybe I should try to figure out what the audio format is for the movie dvd and compare with the game disc. I tried all the settings on the amplifier that had to do with audio inputs, but no luck. Maybe it will be some small thing I'm missing. Thanks

Wait. So I can understand this. On your PS4, you play a DVD and it plays sound through your home theater system but the games don't? If that's the case, try fiddling with the in game sound options.
Thanks, I plan to do just that today. The other thing I didn't mention was that I have a large number of movies that have been copied from commercial discs (by removing copy protection) and they don't have any sound either. The video plays fine. Question: Do you think that an HDMI audio converter might do the trick?
These devices apparently are able to strip the audio from the HDMI signal and output it to optical. They are placed between the HDMI out on the PS4 and the HDMI in on the amplifier. Your thoughts? Thanks

Hmm. I don't have any experience with HDMI audio converters. Though I did just hook up a blu-ray player to my mom's 15 year old tube TV with an HDMI to AV converter, lol. If you're willing to shell out the money, it wouldn't hurt to try. You obviously have tried other solutions and it still doesn't seem to work.
EDIT: Just did a quick search on Amazon. They seem to be about 50 bucks. Sucks you have to shell out more money for something that may or may not work.

I ordered and received the HDMI audio converter from a place out west for $24 plus tax. Installed it yesterday and found it solved the problem. A small piece of extra hardware to join the maze of wires already in place, but a small price to pay to get the home theatre sound back for all sources. Maybe this solution may help others on the forum if they are having the same problem. I would only take this course if all else fails. Thanks again for all your input and advice.

Most people don't tell us so its hard to recommend a solution to someone who has a similar problem without knowing it will work or not.
