Games that would fail if remade today

So, we have always been talking about "games that you want to see remade in HD" or "games that need to have a sequel on the PS4" and things like that. To be different, why don't we talk about games that will fail if it would be remade today? Let's take for instance The Game of Life for the PS1. It was bad when it was released back in the day. It was a board game that was made into a video game. I don't think it will do better if it was remade today. I think board games made into video games would be a failure most of the time.

Haha before I read your last sentence I was instantly thinking monopoly console game.

You certainly never played Monopoly for the PS3, that game is fun as hell!

Also, i don't think that there are games that would fail if remade today, mostly because how developers manage to already ruin them in the first place when reviving old series, so the problem is theirs, not the games themselves.

What about Irritating stick on the PS 1? The gameplay involved guiding a ball through an electrocuted Maze. I wonder how the developers would make this game work today. If they just made an HD version, I think it's bound to fail.

Honestly it depends on what you consider a game - if you can see something like the Irritating stick being a game then it won't matter much outside of a reasonable price - if that. I mean have you seen the Angry Bird phenomenon.

So, are we talking about games that were awful then and would still be awful with a remake, or games that were ok, but a remake would likely fail?

I'm going to take on the latter: Final Fantasy 7

I'm going against the tide on this one for good reason. 16 years ago this game sold over 10 million copies and were many people's first RPG, warping our expectation for the genre forever. Despite clamoring for a re-release in HD, Sony re-releases the game after a 15 year anniversary, and it sells around an abysmal 200 million. I think that proves that the demand is far exaggerated by the old school, as the new school really doesn't have a reason to care about that game.

I think that Red Dead Redemption could fall into that category. The game was very well rounded off. It was a perfect standalone story with a strong start and finish. A direct sequel or even a spiritual successor would just not work as well. Some stones are best left unturned, and I think that RDR is one of those games that is best left alone.
