Indie Development on the PS4

So Microsoft seemed to be quite enthusiastic about working with indie devs, and it looks like Sony holds a very similar attitude following after what we've seen at Gamescom, here is what we know about the indie programme , and also the indie games that we will be seeing on the PS4:

  • They will be working with devs and they will be allowing self publishing
  • Binding of Isaac will be free on the PS +
  • Hotline Miami 2 will come to the PS4

Really this seems to be it from what I can tell, feel free to add anything that I've missed. But I just thought to get a little list together because Sony are doing a very good job this time round with the indies and it's just a great opportunity for both gamers and also the developers so it's a win-win for everyone.

I am really excited to see this approach from Sony towards indie devs. They announce a lot of exclusive games yesterday and most of 'em were indie games. Wow!

I think Playstation is definitely the platform of choice for indie games on consoles now. I am still very happy to hear that The Binding of Isaac will be free for PS+ subscribers, that game looks great. I hope it does nicely and Edmund McMillen doesn't get burned out by Sony, because he already got screwed by Microsoft with Super Meat Boy, but I think Sony is being much nicer to indies indeed.

It's great and all, but am i the only one that is seeing what is really happening? Sony is losing so much money with the development of the PSVita and PS4 that they don't have much for internal development, so they have to rely on outside help for now. I ain't saying that is bad, but i wish there was some new entries on some Sony classic series.

Where is my Ape Escape, Sony?

Now they're competing which one will hold the better indie games, and which company will work better with indie developers as a whole. Still, good news for indie devs to get recognized since some of the indie games I play are amazing graphically, and musically. I enjoyed playing Binding of Isaac on my PC and would love to see it ported to the PS.

I think there's too much focus on indie gaming with this gen. 97.5% of indie games are bloody terrible anyway.

Sony and Indie developers alike have shown the strength of their bonds over and over again. Just look at E3, Gamescon, and PAX. Each one of those major gaming events were filled with indie games coming to the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. Not during one event has a game been repeated from a previous event.

That right there speaks a great deal about PS4 indie development.

You forgot Hohokum and Rime which both look great.

I love the focus on Indie titles, I bought way more digital only titles than retail releases this last gen. So many of the AAA titles are just completely generic these days.

I wouldn't say that they are terrible. But yeah, they are not hardcore games - something we all want to see from Sony. Some good open world games that are exclusive to PS4.

Sometimes the Indie games can be some of the best. I'm excited that it sounds like the PS4 is going to be developing that more.

That's going way overboard. Limbo, Bastion, Flower, Journey, Braid, Spelunky, Super Meatboy, The Binding of Isaac, Dust, Fez, Cave Story... and way more. All indie games. Sony giving these indie developers so much freedom is nothing but a good thing. More than a few of those developers are likely to make games on a bigger scale once they get more exposure and more funds, and having an outlet on the Playstation gives them that.

That's rather much isn't it? I mean I could say that 95.6% of all non-indie games are bloody terrible and of the remainder over 70% of them are bloody mediocre, but that's obviously something of an exaggeration isn't it? There have been many great indie games, some awesome, and most decent along with some rather useless ones - which makes sense as that could be said of most games out there.

It doesn't matter how many are bad. As long as there are good indie games, they'll be worth developing. There are bad video games across all genres and developers, that doesn't mean they aren't worth making.

Well it's a smart business decision. Why start you're own indie developer when you can just buy them out and own their assets instead? It seems like indie developers maybe better with Sony than Microsoft though. Check out this article from Wired.

If only there was a gaming platform which was free to publish for everyone.

In which no body regulated what goes through. If only. Oh, wait a minute....

It doesn't exist! That's what you were going to say right? Or no... were you trying to start some more PC vs Console BS because apparently you really have nothing better to do? I'm just asking.

I'd LOVE that! I'd be able to play all the console "exclusives" I've been dying to play on one system! How awesome would that be?
