“PlayStation Now is a joke,” says Pachter

PS Now has been branded “a joke” by Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.

Speaking with Game Informer, Pachter said of PS Now, “PlayStation Now is a joke. There is no publisher that is going to license content that’s less than two-years old because they would be concerned that they can’t sell as many copies if they make it available for subscription or rental. “This has no prayer of working. None.”

Pachter’s rationale is that publishers will not license their game for monthly streaming as it will dent their ‘per-unit’ sales, along the same lines as bands on Spotify.

I disagree - PS Now is not set for new releases, it's for PS1/PS2 and early PS3 games, where the sales of these games are pretty much non-existent anyway. So what has he got his knickers in a twist for?

I thought the main point of PS Now is to stream old games, it's not meant for new games. Everyone knows that streaming new games isn't going to be viable because of profiting concern. PS Now was announced as a rental service for PS1, PS2, and to a certain extent PS3 games.

Wow, he knows nothig, most of the persons who get PS now get it for PS2 games released like 5 years ago that they really want to play, not for newer titles

Whoever says that the PlayStation is a joke is someone without a TV let alone a PlayStation console. Since PlayStation 1, I have been a devoted fan and since god of war 1, I've been hooked. PlayStation is the past, present and future of gaming.

I think part of the problem is that since they haven't released the exact details about Playstation Now yet, some people are getting their hopes up and expecting something unrealistic. They aren't going to let you stream every single PS3 game to your PS4 for only $8/month, but that's the kind of deal that some people think it's going to be.

It's probably going to be a great service, but we don't know yet how it's going to work. I'm hoping that it includes as many PS3 games as possible, but I don't expect brand new releases to be a part of it especially if the monthly fee is relatively low.

I think that making PS1 and PS2 games available for streaming would be a great way to address the lack of backwards compatibility of the PS4. That is, assuming that I have the right mindset here, that we are talking about streaming it to the new device. Not only is it a great revenue generator for PS, but it gives us old fogies the ability to play games that we enjoyed growing up. I would happily purchase a PS4 if I knew that I could play games that I enjoyed on my older platforms. It isn't as good as being able to use the older discs I already own, but I think the compromise works.

I really hope he's wrong on this one. If Sony offers the right price to publishers, then they'd be willing to bite and put their games on this service. I think Now really has a chance. I believe Sony knows what they're doing with this one.

Isn't Pachter the one that is usually almost always wrong on his predictions? Seems like he is just spewing b.s. He doesn't seem to get what PS Now is for. Its for old games that people want to play but can't because they either a) don't have their old consoles anymore or b) don't have the disks to those games but want to play. Its going to be a great service and I'm sure a new avenue for revenue for studios who license those games to Sony on a game that would likely never see the light of day again and would otherwise never make that developer and publisher money again without this avenue. I'm all for PS Now. Will I use it? We'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, don't think he quite gets the service. I think PS Now will be a tough sell, just because we haven't really had anything like this before. I guess the closest thing was OnLive which, IMO, had a good model, it was just ahead of its time and didn't have someone huge like Sony backing it.

As far as I know, its supposed to be for previous generations. A lot of people when they get a new console, sell their old consoles and games (can even reference the thread on this forum to see how many people actually do this). Its a selling point for PS4 for people who want to play the old games but have gotten rid of them. I like the idea of PSNow because there were a lot of games I haven't played but want to from PS1-3 and it would be a lot more convenient using this streaming service than it would hunting down and buying the games individually.

Not to mention it's also an incentive for people who never owned a PS3 to now get a PS4 and play old PS3 games.

I think this service is a fantastic move by Sony, but it'll take a while before it builds up a huge library. Once it does, it'll serve them well. They won't have to worry about implementing BC in all consoles, because all they need is this PSNow app. They can also start selling it with their Blu-ray players, Laptops, Tablets, TVs, whatever they want.

I think PS Now has a lot of potential, but it relies solely on how the latency is. It will make or break the experience.
