Yep, Sony has announce that they are going to launch a 12 GB version for USA and Canada on 18th August. Good news for everyone looking to buy PS3 really cheap -

New Budget $200 12GB PS3 coming August 18th

For anyone who was holding out for a PS3 drop with the PS4 on the horizon, you may be getting a better surprise. It looks like a new SKU (the 15th one?) for the PS3 will be coming out this fall to appeal to the budget-minded consumer. Not sure if the Hard Drive size will be an issue (I know I make use of my 250GB) but what does this mean to anyone waiting for the PS3 to dip below $200?

I think that the 12GB PS3 would be a perfect gift this holiday season because it's so affordable. As for the 500 GB PS3 bundle, I'd rather go with the Wii U or add another hundred+ bucks to purchase a PS4.

Yeah, this is definitely a good deal for people who still haven't purchased a PlayStation 3 yet. While it does only have 12GB, it can still be managed, especially if you decide not to subscribe to PlayStation Plus. I'm also sure this will add to a nice boost in sales for the PlayStation 3 as well, and we might even see start to become the number 1 seller soon.

A very nice way to go out with a bang. Because there will be no backwards compatibility with the PS3, it is good to see that there are cheap alternatives available for those still willing to play their PS3 games. The price looks really good and 12GB is pretty comfortable too, I'm curious if they will just keep in the USA and Canada , or will the also release it in other countries?

So it will be $80 less than the 500GB one! Wow that's a really big difference. Lmao. I find it hard to see the point of getting this instead of getting the 500 GB bundled with GTA. You can find a 250 gb on Kijiji or Craiglist for like 120 bucks

That's strange, it almost sounds like they're just trying to get rid of PS3's. A quick price drop for very last minute PS3 adopters. Like jptrey said though it might be a complete lost cause with 500GB GTA5 bundle...

This reminds me of that limited release of the Nintendo Wii that was released with a lot of it's features missing that only went for 99$ and was really small and with a black and red theme. Wish i knew how it was called.
Welp, this is good, specially for the people who want to get in cheap.

I wonder how people will make use of 12GB though. Given how much you have to install or download for a lot of games, 12GB doesn't grant a lot of mileage. I was surprised to see how much of my 250GB I actually used up.

Is it just me, or does the model also look even smaller than the slim?

I am not sure if those who don't use external hard drives will even buy this piece. It's not of any use to them. You will have to use an external hard drive you you want to enjoy this version.

I'm way more interested in that 500gb bundle. You're essentially getting a new game ($60 value) plus 400+ gigabytes of storage. Even though I already have a PS3 (40gb model), I just might buy that bundle sometime down the line. And I'm sure Sony could have added more than a dozen gigs of storage for $200 - my MP3 player has 16gb and I can't even fit all of my music on it. I imagine you wouldn't be able to download more than a few (4-6 full games) games with 12 gigs.

That sounds like a wonderful gift for some of the younger kids that are just starting to get to the gaming age. With a console with as many games as the PS3, it should be perfectly sufficient until they're old enough for PS5 or whatever is around at that point. I might have to look in to this a little more seriously as we get closer to Christmas, might be a good gift for my nephews.

I assume it does everything a regular PS3 does, except for the reduced storage capacity?
