4k tv ?

Hi everyone,

How does the ps4 respond when plugged to a 4k tv ? Is the max game resolution still 1080p ? Is the ps4 dashboard optimized for 1080p or higher ?

Is 60 fps the new standard for ps4, or all games still allowed to be released in 30 fps ?

Thanks everyone !

Not much is info is readily available about 4k tv as yet, but these are good questions, maybe in a few days someone will answer this thread with all the requisite info.

Hmm, not sure as I've yet to see anyone use the PS4 on a 4k TV. As for frames per second, the PS4 can run games at 60fps but it depends on how the developers want to optimize their games. i see that 60fps games will become more common on the PS4 though.

1080p is max. For some reason they didn't worry about 4k.

Seemed like a strange move to me, just because Sony is heavily vested in 4k and seeing as how they heavily pushed Blu-ray and 1080p last generation. But I'm glad they focused more on gaming this generation, and not some technology that only a fraction of the population would own. Smart move on their part. Even by the end of last generation, we barely got full 1080p games, so no way are we ready for 4k.

My guess is, in about 4-5 years, we'll get a revision of the PS4 that will play content (not games, though).

As of now. There really is no point in developing for 4K right now because no one has 4K. It will take probably another 10 years for 4K to be standard like 1080P has become standard. As for PS4 supporting it, I was under the assumption on something I read a while ago that they did make the PS4 capable of 4K. Maybe its not in the software now but as 4K becomes more adopted, I'm sure a software update will fix that. I mean, PS4 only has HDMI inputs and HDMI has had the capability of 4K for a long time. Then again, I could be wrong on everything I said :)

The push to HD was driven by the OTA channels no longer supporting stand definition (480i/p). By the time these networks are ready to update and push this again, we will be well beyond 4k.

That would be cool if it is true. You might be right, since all the necessary hardware is there. It's sorta like how the PS3 added 3D support with a firmware upgrade. Maybe that'll be the case with the PS4 and 4K.

I don't think 4K gaming will even make it to PS4. I believe it's going to take many years before 4K TVs become affordable and by the time it does become cheap, the next generation would have come. During that time, they might as well just incorporate 4K into their next gen console instead. One other thing is, is the PS4 even capable of displaying 4K video games?

No the graphics card is simply not powerful enough for 4k gaming. If there ever was a game for 4k, it would be highly optimised, but there's no point. 1080p is great for gaming.

I can already see myself being highly amused by your future posts, keep 'em coming kid.;)

If you're referring to the XB1 lack of power I agree with you. I simply meant hardware wise the capability is there and since the XB1 is inferior on a hardware level, its a natural assumption the PS4 is capable. I assume you're amused because of your high praise of the PS4 which again I agree is a superior peice of tech. I wasn't trolling and I'm not sure if you took offense to me mentioning the XB1 on here. I own both consoles and well I also seem to have evolved passed fan-boyism so I didn't catch what I said as quickly as yourself. Regardless , I'm glad I could make you smile ;)

Basically, 4k is 4000 pixels x 2100 pixels, which will make the image that much more clear. Until this is the "standard" for home viewing preferences, 4k will be very limited. Have you noticed that your "cable" bill has gone up yearly? It's because of the cost to film in HD. The "cable" provider pays the network for programming, therefore, they have to recoup their "losses" by raising the price of your services. Just imagine how much it will go up when 4k becomes the norm. If they can figure out how to record digitally, then 4k will thrive.

No offence taken here buddy, I'm not much of a fanboy.:)

There's just been so much talk about the X1 being gimped it was funny seeing someone go the other way. I agree the potential is there and a year or two into the cycle we'll see better optimisation. Like I always say the only real difference is the exclusives since they're meant for that console, even then the difference will be negligible.

With the current state of technology, you'd be looking at a serious price bump if you wanted the current consoles to support 4k. Not to mention, both the PS4 and X1 are equipped with HDMI 1.4b, which can't do 4k @ 60Hz, meaning any games that DID manage to output at a full 4k would be limited to 30fps, hardly viable for gaming in this day and age where 60fps is heavily preferred. Only with HDMI 2 will it support 4k @ 60Hz

So while hooking up a PS4/X1 to a 4k TV will work, there's no benefit in the way of trying to be ready for 4k gaming. It won't come this generation.

This. 4K is still way too new and expensive for it to be a part of gaming. Nobody has a 4KTV. I have heard though that the PS4 can output 4K video, but I'm not sure is this was actually implemented.
