In what is shaping up to be a historic year for gamers, I’m delighted to share an important new milestone with you. PS4’s North American debut on November 15th was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than one million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours. Now, with PS4’s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold.

It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn’t have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence. The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.

While PS4’s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play.

Thank you for your passion and your support — we couldn’t have done this without you.

Insanely good start for them. They deserve it. The launch line up might be just mediocre, but I think everything else about the console itself is just incredible.

Well deserved indeed. I agree that the launch titles are a little lackluster, but considering it's launch, I think it's a little understandable. I'm mostly looking forward to seeing how the integration with the Vita and Vita TV will play out and become standard if it does end up being so, I think it's the most practical feature integration put forth when comparing both consoles. I'm also glad that they are doing well, since I do plan on picking one up in the future, and the significant fan support will no doubt help them get more games into the mix. I just hope they don't screw it up.

This is all too impressive. These numbers will only grow for Christmas/Boxing Day too. As early as it is for this type of speculation, this might be the most bought console ever made.

Amazing numbers! I wasn't sure what they would be, seeing as they didn't have a huge selection of launch titles. Glad to see that sony is doing well with playstation!

ha! Looks like Sony will have enough money to fix everything and give us tons of Gaika storage once it comes out and more features on Playstation 4! I hope some of you guys can be one of those 2.1 Million with me oen day!

I don't really care too much about launch line-ups. In a year or so, it'll be irrelevant. What is important is the console itself. If I don't like the launch line-up (which I don't), then I'll just wait until next year or the year after. If the console itself has issues, well those are harder to overcome.

It'll be interesting to see how the consoles end up. I don't think we'll ever see a console dominate as much as the PS2 did (marketshare wise), but I could see this being the highest selling console of all time. Each generation, there seems to be more and more gamers as the industry grows. Is the PS2 currently the highest selling console? I know that hit 150 million, or something.

I agree, it should be hitting the 1 billion mark before spring. I mean if a video game could do it in a matter of days, I am sure Sony will have it done in a couple of months.
