Anyone else hoping that zombie games die down this generation?

Yeah, I'm certainly not advocating for the end of the zombie genre. Just make it more interesting, everyone and their mom has been churning out zombie games and for the most part they are making the same exact games. I'd love more werewolf or vampire games but for some reason we don't really get those. Zombie games are just easier but we all know the rules that they multiply fast.

Yeah in some way most of the notable games either have a zombie mode, zombie-themed DLC, or is a zombie-theme game entirely. Right now zombies are getting a stretch similar to vampires between the 70s and late 2000s...only it's all condensed between the mid-2000s and now.

Honestly, I don't really mind Zombie games or anything related to Zombies but only as long as they do not REPEAT. Some Zombie games have been repeating the same story line for the whole game and honestly, this ticks me off quite a bit. Hopefully developers can think of unique ways of using Zombies and not repeating a great idea again and again.

I just miss classic, rising from the graves like Thriller or Night of the Living Dead, wanting brains for whatever reason, no zombie crowd, zombies. Sometimes you'll see hordes of zombies in games that are likely more than there are in a particular town.

I just want a basic horror game again. Zombies have been cannon fodder in games lately, it's all about mowing them down in creative was not about the threat or how horrifying they can be: just see Dead Rising 3. No one is scared of zombies anymore because there is not mystery to them. It's all about devs figuring out a way to revitalize the genre.

I believe the key isn't to make zombies more interesting (there's only so much you can do with an antagonist that has limited vocabulary and one focus/goal in mind), but to make the world that stuff takes place in more interesting. Throw in different settings to change things up. While it was still a kill zombie entry, Undead Nightmare was the most interesting change of scenery for zombies (wild west).

When you change the setting you sometimes get gold and don't even have to worry about the story as much. Things would just fall in place.

Take for instance, a DLC mission, side quest, or randomly occurring even in the world of Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age where zombies appear and if gone unchecked it becomes more of a problem. The origin of why zombies have appeared in those fantasy worlds would be more interesting (to me anyway) than a modern or futuristic setting where zombies occur either by:

A. corrupt government/organization dropping the ball scientifically
1. Accidentally releasing an agent that produces zombie-like characteristics and is spread as a disease
2. A test subject escapes
3. Intentionally releases an agent that does the same as 1

B. Nuclear/biological strike causes mutated abominations that have zombie-like features, but aren't actually zombies...more like ghouls

Which leads to the protagonist setting out to either find out the cause or maybe struggle for survival...while finding out the cause along the way.

In the next Elder Scrolls they would be due for plague of some sort any moment now (vampirism is basically a disease in TES) or necromancers somehow getting their hands on a good deal of power. That's what I'd like to see, zombies in a different setting/timeline.

Well, society's fickle tastes will move on to the next mythical creature soon enough. I'm just surprised we didn't see more vampire-based games when vampire popularity hit its fever pitch. Dragons have also seen their share of the spot light.

Maybe werewolves will be fancied next.

Dragons has always been a part of gaming since they're a huge part of fantasy literature and fantasy can crossover into several genres/subgenres. Usually they're spaced out depending on when a new entry in a game is made...and you're not fighting dragon hordes or zombie dragon hordes.

Vampires are solitary usually, you might have covens or savage packs, but unless it's a thing where vampires take over the world they would pop up far and in between in game...and would need to supplemented with something else. That said I would love a new Vampire: The Masquerade game. That should be the go to for a vampire game or the bare bones for one. Like yeah I could kill vampires Dynasty Warriors-style, but something deeper would be cool when it comes to vampires.

...werewolves will never get much love unless they're sharing the marquee with vampires or this strange thing when this guy owns a castle and has every creature of the night in the same castle...like some sort version of Bruce Lee's Game of Death produced by Hammer Films.

Yes yes yes, I really hope they do. Zombie games are good in moderation, but the amount that came out last gen was way too much. I really hope some more past war games come out instead of future and present wars.

There are a lot of fads that have developed, evolved, and become integrated into the standards of current gaming that I wish to see die out and yes, this is one of them. Not only in games, but in movies as well. I'm not too adamant about it, though, because I know that it provides joy for some other people with different tastes. I know a lot of people who would like to see the superhero movie fad die out, and me being a fan of these (even though a lot of them are admittedly crap), I understand what it's like to be on the other side wishing against it.

Zombies are cannon fodder, that's all they are anymore. They stopped being scary years ago especially in games. It's not about the zombies anymore it's about the humans in the zombie infested world. It's just not fun anymore, at least with the superhero movie there are different stories that can be told but there is only so much you can do with zombies. Like the WW2 genre, I need a break.

With zombies they ran with the whole virus thing as opposed to old school zombies. Of course survival isn't as interesting against slow moving zombies. A break would be nice, but you can easily work with them in game. There's not much you have to write for since the antagonists you're going to see throughout the game don't have lines beyond screeching, moaning, and gurgling.

Zombies have always been more of a plot point than an actual thing to overcome or fear in games. It's always been more about how the characters are reacting to their world rather than focusing on the zombies. That's why The Walking Dead is so good or The Last of Us. It's about the people really. I'm just tired of the ubiquitious shoot the zombies DLC. Let' s think a bit more out of the box if the undead are making an appearance.
