Are Games Too Long?

Well let's just be honest, I think we'd all rather a game that's too long than a game that's too short. If I'm dishing out $60 then give me all you got. I'm never concerned with beating a game really, I'm just there for the ride.

I understand just wanting to get in and beat something quick and screw around with any post game goodies that are left but I think it's a little picky claiming that some games are too long. And trust me, I'm one of those guys who doesn't have time anymore either. Nowadays I just stick to fighting games.

I don't mind if games are long, I mind if getting to the end wasn't worth it. There is nothing worse than spending 40 hours+ in the story mode getting every little thing to find out the ending was terrible. Besides, if I'm going to shell out $60 for a game? It darn well better take me a while to complete it!

What is wrong with a game being too long? It's great if a game offers hours of content. It is not forcing you to play through it all. Most RPGs like Skyrim will have 20 hours of story quests, and then all of the side quests are what make up the hundreds of hours. I really hate paying 60 dollars for an 8 hour game when i could pay the same price and get a 200+ hour game.

It's not that there is something wrong with a game being too long, there are just too many games. It can get hard to keep up with them all.

I think with a lot of popular games now focusing on online multiplayer content, that you're going to see more content involved into multiplayer and less content into single player. We're already seeing that in a lot of games where single player is focused on an overall story than actual gaming content. The money lies in online multiplayer games and that's where we're going to see Devs focus their attention on.

I love being able to sink in around two hundred hours into a game to finally finish it. The only bad part of that is I feel like a I lose a part of myself every time I finish a long game like Fallout or Skyrim. Being able to put a lot of hours into a video game lets me show that I have been able to achieve something, sure I may have been sitting down for the whole time, but I dedicated X amount of hours to finishing the game.

No, they are not. Games are pretty short nowadays.

Nah, it's very mixed. There's games of any length now. Sure, certain genres do gravitate towards certaing lengths more (short FPSes, long RPGs) but still good variety.

If you count multiplayer, games are more replayable now than they've ever been!

I always think that the Assassin's Creed games are too long.
It's not that the story isn't always interesting or compelling, it's just the gameplay and sidequests that are far too repetitive and you end up getting tired of it pretty fast.

I find it always depends on how they do the story, like Skyrim was long but tbh I still felt they made the plot to weak, especially when it came to the guilds. I loved oblivion. The plot was good, the guilds were fun and stories unto themselves, skyrim I got bored, the only real good one was the assassins guild.

Books can be too long, movies can be too long, and games can be too long. There is no perfect length or duration. Portal was a perfect game, even though it only lasted a few hours. Each game is an experience, and I expect different things from them.

Edit - Oh, and I love Skyrim, and the elder scrolls series in general. 500+ hours. My friends joke that it's a hiking simulator, but it's about immersion and losing yourself in a virtual world. It's a very different game from Dragon Age or other RPGs. If you judge it purely by the story-line and characters, yes, it will come up short.

I like games that are very long. It makes the play through more meaningful and exciting. It also makes me nervous at times because you can lose you progress sometimes if you don't get it right. If I wanted to play shorter games, I would have played indie game for a fast and fun play through.
