I have a Yamaha RX-V365 5.1-Channel Receiver that I will be using with my PS4. For some reason this model is not able to pass any audio through via HDMI (really Yamaha?), so I can’t simply connect everything via HDMI cables like you’d want to. So I’m using my Samsung LN-T4665F TV as the ‘receiver’. I have the PS4 HDMI out going to the TV, then Optical Audio out of my TV to the Receiver. The trouble is I’m not sure how to tell if I’m really getting true Surround Sound, as in the sound of the jet flying from left to right actually follows from left to right. I’ve been doing some reading but everyone throws around terms like Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, Bistream, etc. in different contexts and I can’t keep it straight. I just want to know which settings I have to use on my PS4, TV and receiver to make sure I’m getting the best possible surround sound quality out of my setup! Any help is greatly appreciated! Well I did some playing around with my setup and the audio output settings of the PS4. For me, the best setup was running the HDMI out of the PS4 right to the TV, then running the optical audio out of the PS4 to my receiver. Then you have to change the audio output on the PS4 to use the optical audio port, then choose either Linear PCM, Bitstream Dolby Digital, or Bitstream DTS. For me the best sounding option was DTS - it provided a true surround sound that was clear and crisp.
I was surprised by this - (and please correct me if i'm wrong) but I thought the Linear PCM would be the best choice because then the PS4 would be doing the processing, but when I chose that option I only got stereo output. Picking one of the Bitstream options apparently lets the receiver do the processing, and then I was able to hear 5.1 surround sound.
Not positive why or even if my logic is correct, but that was the setup that sounded the best so I went with it.

Does your receiver have an ARC (Audio Return Channel), or the option to turn it off and on? That allows audio to play through the HDMI. Personally, I find that the optical audio input provides the best sound for gaming, movies, etc.
