Audio Setup

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.



When playing Blu Ray movies the sound levels are extremely low. I have to turn the volume up significantly from the standard TV volume. I've changed the audio format to bitstream direct but it doesnt seem to have made any difference. Is there an easy fix somewhere in the settings?



I currently have my PS4 connected to my TV via HDMI. I also have 2 other HDMI ports in use on the TV [one is Sky+ and one is 5.1 Home Cinema]. Ideally, I would like to sound from the PS4 to play through the home cinema when watching Blu Rays but currently this doesn't work. When I select the TV input for the home cinema there is no sound.



I'm presuming there is an easy way to setup so that sound can be played via the home cinema? It would be great if sound still played through the TV if the home cinema was switched off without having to swap cables about.

Some home cinema receivers do not support audio through the HDMI connections.... My Yamaha RX-V365 for example. I have a question posted in this very forum about it, haha. So check into that first. If its not supported, you can run the HDMI out of your PS4 to the TV, then run an optical cable from your tv to your receiver, and get sound through the home cinema that way. If you do some google searching and find out your receiver does support audio through the HDMI ports, then check your setup again. You should have an HDMI out of the PS4 to the receiver, then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Make sure its coming from the HDMI out port. Then if you run an HDMI from you cable box to the receiver you can switch between inputs on the receiver to listen to all your audio through the 5.1 speakers. Generally the best idea is to run all your devices (PS4, cable box, etc) via HDMI to the receiver, then have one HDMI out from the receiver to the TV.

The Home cinema is pretty old - it's a Sony dav-dz531w. Had a quick google but couldn't find out if it supports it so will have another look.

Just checked and the receiver only has a single HDMI OUT port so I presume it won't support audio through HDMI. It would previously played sound from my Xbox 360 but that was connected to the TV via component rather than HDMI. It does have a coaxial or optical 'digital in' as well as component in/out.

Looks like optical cable is the only option - does it make a difference if it's coax or optical?

A lot of receivers only have one HDMI out because its presumed that you will connect all the devices to the receiver, then have the receiver send video to the tv via that HDMI out. But using the optical cable to send the audio to the receiver will definitely work.

I think the PS4 only has an optical audio out - This is what I use as well. The HDMI out of the PS4 goes to my tv, then the optical audio out of the PS4 goes to the optical audio in on my receiver. Just be sure to go to the PS4 audio settings and change the default audio output to the optical port. It will also ask you if you would like to use Linear PCM, Bitstream Dolby Digital, or Bitstream DTS processing... Now I wont lie and tell you I totally understand the differences between these types of audio processing, but I tested all three and the best 5.1 surround audio came from using Bitstream DTS with my setup.
