Battlefront made at DICE's insistence

Describing DICE and Star Wars: Battlefront as "a match made in heaven," Söderlund explains that the next Battlefront game was approved at DICE's insistence. "It was almost not happening," Söderlund recalls. "It was just something as boring as resources and availability. The DICE guys Karl Magnus Troedsson and Patrick Bach were talking and I told them we were in dialogues with Disney over this deal and they just looked at me and said, 'Why haven't you spoken to us? What are you doing? We want to make Battlefront.'"

"I didn't anticipate them wanting to work on a license – they've always been new IP or their own IP," Söderlund continued. "But they were just like, 'we would kill to make this game' and the whole studio started talking about it like, 'please give us this game'. That's when I called Frank [Gibeau, EA Labels boss] and I realised we had something here. [...] They begged to do it, the opportunity was there and that's exactly why you'll see a game that will be what it needs to be."

so seems like DICE had to petition for Battlefront, and didn't just have it thrust upon them by the higher ups. So good on them, gives them a bit more creative leeway to do different things then they would if they just did Battlefield (even if they were already doing Mirror's Edge).

It's great too hear this because now we know they are not doing it just for the money but because they actually love the game and everything around it. Now we are almost certain that we will get a product with quality and not something made for the appeal of the masses. Most of the people working for DICE probably grew up with Star Wars so they do it with the vision of the fans.

This news got me really excited about the game and more relieved.

I love DICE so I think this is a good choice, I used to love the Star Wars games, but some have been pretty bad. Hopefully DICE will do a good job and get it back to the top!

I do not know if I'm the only one, but I imagine a Battlefield in the world of Star Wars! Dice really is the perfect studio to do this.

I know we will not see this game before a long time, but it's amazing how I want to see this game I can not wait.

They also prepare a new Mirror Edge.

I hope they keep well the world of Star Wars. I give them full confidence.

I'm prepared to give them a far shot. I think far to often we tend to be down on studios handling beloved franchises but I haven't seen or heard anything that would make me doubt DICE's capability to make a great game. Until I hear that they failed hard or unless we have a Colonial Marines situation happening, I'm willing to give them a chance.

Oh hell yeah! I love Dice! This just made my night, had a horrible freaking day and who knew gaming news could make me feel awesome? :D Thank you for posting man!

I think its crazy to think that a games developer with multiple hits under its belt has to convince someone to LET them make an awesome game. Thats crazy!

Didn't think of it that way, lets hope it's as great as it originally would have been. If you get my drift.

The ancient enemy of EA, DICE, the hero we deserve and the one we need right now. Here's to hoping they do the same with Mirror's Edge 2.

I'm playing the wait and see game with this. On one hand I'm super excited but on the other hand we've been burned before haven't we. Until I see some proof of awesome, I'm leaving nothing to chance. Although it is pretty exciting news. And let's remember just because a game maker is amazing doesn't mean that the game itself will be good. Let us not forget the curse of the licensed game.

I'm super happy about this. I'm so glad the the new Battlefront is being made by Battlefront fans. And the DICE 3 engine is amazing, so I can't wait to see that in action with Star Wars.
