Best laptop for games

What type of laptop would you buy a gamer? My son is asking for a new laptop but I don't know what kind to get him. I was thinking Dell but I don't know what specs we would need. Any tips?

I think Alienware and Toshiba laptops are mostly designed for gaming.

I have an Alienware M17x and it is an awesome device. It has a 17.3-inch LCD screen, which is plenty big for any avid gamer out there. It uses the NVIDIA GTX 460M, which although not the most top-of-the-line graphic card, it is still be able to run almost any game on the market today without any trouble due to the 1.5GB of memory.

Asus do some good gaming laptops, MSI too. Why don't you post links to some that are in your price range and we'll let you know if they're any good. Don't go with Alienware, way too overpriced.

If you want a laptop that's specifically made for gaming and will net you very nice performance, then do not buy anything that's Dell or Alienware. Both are Flashy but are horrible compared to their competitors. As MorgUK said, MSI and Asus are probably going to be your best bet, but it really comes down to how much money you are wanting/willing to spend. Keep in mind that gaming laptops are not cheap, and often end up being more expensive, and less powerful by sacrificing things for mobility. However, that doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy gaming on the latest titles with a smooth FPS on Medium/High settings, or blazing through on ultra/max with a clean 60 FPS by paying quite a bit more.

Well Alienware is know for that, so I'd say they are the kings. But my HP ProBook 455 isn't bad, I'm running Skyrim at medium which is more than enough for me.

I would suggest Alienware, but those things are expensive as hell, try rummaging for cheap MSI gaming laptops. I would also suggest you get a refurbished or a secondhand one since their much cheaper.

For a good deal on parts and maximum extensibility, I'd get a laptop from System76. It's a great website, all laptops come with Ubuntu pre-installed and the option to get nothing but the best parts (including graphics card). And Windows 8 is pretty cheap, so you can just order a second HDD in your laptop and install that on it, or just write it over Ubuntu.
