Inspired by last night's absolute demolition job by Germany (that I'll discuss shortly), I just want to say that I can't say I'm overly surprised by Brazil's exit from this World Cup tournament. From what I've seen of Brazil over the past few weeks, I can't say their performances have been anything special or exceptional. In my opinion, they've been rather mediocre and were perhaps lucky to make it as far as the semi-finals.
Being in the UK with the time difference involved, this whole World Cup has taken place either in the evenings or at night – with kick-off’s typically being 5pm (when I finish work, so I miss most of the first half by the time I get home), 8/9pm or even as late as 11pm (when I usually go to bed), so I’ve not seen that much of the competition this time around.
Anyway, last night I witnessed one of the most memorable games I;ve seen in a very long time (if not of all time) and probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. Brazil on their home turf not only getting beaten, but quite literally being comprehensively demolished by Germany 7-1. It's Brazil's largest defeat in the history of this competition. Believe me, I've witnessed some shambolic defending in my time but they had some of the most comical defending that I think I've ever come across. Only 120-odd seconds between the second and fourth goals. David Luiz really did have an 'off day' if I had to single anyone out.
I certainly won’t take anything away from Germany’s superb performance. As a single team effort, they were unstoppable. After about the first ten minutes, they simply dominated the first half. If they can perform good as that with simple one/two point passes, they surely must be in with a great chance to lift the cup on Sunday.
Did anyone else catch the match and if so, what were your thoughts on it?
