Buy now or wait and see if new models have backwards compatability

I want to pre order a ps4 but I am not sure if I should wait and see if Sony releases more ps4 models like they did with the ps3 , backwards compatability, sd card slots ext. I have tried to search the web to find out if there are any plans on making different ones but I haven't been able to find any info. Does anyone here know of any roumers that Sony has plans on changing hardware to better the ps4 in the near future 1-2 years?

Buy now. To be honest, I don't see them implementing backwards compatibility anytime in the near future, so I would rather have something than nothing at all. I have not heard any rumors about Sony even improving the PS4, I don't think there's much to be improved other than backwards compatibility. My recommendation is to just pre-order or buy the PS4 it in the future.

I'm disappointed about the backwards compatibility thing, but the solution is also pretty obvious. Since I don't plan on selling my PS3 anytime soon, I would just use it to play past titles if I wanted to. I wish I didn't have to have several consoles hooked up at once, but I technically already do that with my PS3 and Xbox 360, so it isn't that big a deal for me. I suppose the only thing you have to ask yourself is how important those features are to you, and if the PS4's lack of those features isn't a deal breaker, then I say go for it.

Nah, I don't see Sony making new models in the future that have backwards compatibility. You have to remember that Sony is hoping to take care of this with the use of their new streaming system Gaikai, so it would be pretty counterproductive of them to create a whole new system dedicated to backwards compatibility and then turnaround and make new versions of the PS4 that have the same feature.

I doubt they have any concrete plans for a future console as of now, seeing as they are probably busy focusing on making this new console succeed. And even then, I agree with our members here that it probably won't have backwards compatibility anyway. I'm waiting a while before I buy one as well, but I'm not banking entirely on a new version of the console, rather just waiting for the library to build and possibly a significant price drop.

I would not purchase a PS 4 at launch date but I'm not waiting for backwards compatibility either. What's the use when I already have a PS3? It's not a feature that I'm looking forward to or hoping that they would incorporate. My reason why I would delay my purchase is the hope that there would be a reduction in price. Lol.

I will probably buy it after 1 or 2 years. It would give me time to see if it does everything that Sony claims it can do. Also to see if it has good graphics, no lag, and all that stuff. I don't think Sony will include backwards compatibility, as I heard that they are putting a Cloud Service out at the end of 2013/early 2014. Anyway I already have a ps3, and a ps2, so it doesn't really matter to me if the ps4 has backward compatibility or not.

I don't see Sony changing their backwards compatibility plans at all, but there is a small glimmer of hope provided by the cloud service: http://ps4forum.com/32-playstation-4/663-ps4s-cloud-service-launch-early-2014-a.html

That does sound pretty interesting, actually. I'm still not entirely sold on the cloud service, but streaming PS3 games is, I suppose, the next best thing to backwards compatibility. I'm still going to wait a while, but if the cloud service ends up being a hit then I'd be far more likely to buy a PS4 sooner rather than later. It's kind of exciting just to sit back and watch, though, so I personally don't feel like I'm missing out on much.

Backwards compatibility is a huge thing for consumers and it would be ignorant to say that Sony and Microsoft aren't aware of this, but as long as the PS3 sells, I don't imagine them making plans to have that as an extra feature. There is the possibility for it once the PS3 has run its full course from a sales standpoint, but it would be nice to have compatibility with the ps1 and 2 titles. The problem is, the titles aren't sold mainstream anymore, and soon that PS3 bar you see in game stores will be replaced with PS4, the PS3 taking a backseat. If it's something that's constantly requested, it might happen eventually.

Being able to play the games you already have on the new console is a really good thing! But, if you can play the games you already have and just buy like 1-2 games for the new console, it means game developers will lose money, meaing sony will lose money. So if it's not compatible, you have to buy games just to enjoy the console...I don't really see Sony making the ps4 backwards compatible.

I don't have a lot of money invested into PS 3 content so I'm more willing to jump into the waters with the PS 4 then I was before. I have a few games that I want to be compatible with the PS 4, but if they aren't I'm not going to get rid of my PS 3. I think that the PS 4's graphics are going to be so amazing that when I go back to the PS 3 the difference will be really noticeable. I don't know if that will affect me too much with the games that are out this year, but if you have anything from when PS 3 first came out, it'll be a hard transition back!

Buy at launch. You have zero chance of BC coming later. The PS4 is heavily integrated with Gaikai. So not only is it being used for some of the social aspects but the plan is to offer older games in a streaming platform. They are planning to launch this in 2014 so there is not way they will offer another means of BC when they are positioning this as a major selling point.
