Buying games overseas?

I wanted to know if I bought a game from the US (I live in the UK), would there be any difference between that copy and a UK copy in terms of online?

Also, is there a way to tell what region a disc is from looking at the serial?

The PS4 is region free but not all games are region free. I believe there can be some discrepancies depending on if the game has online functions or not.

I'd try googling the answer and asking on the official sony support forums as I believe a support manager will be able to give you an exact answer.

Thanks for the reply. I will follow the step you recommend.

Like which games are not region free? As you said you are referring to any possible MP a game may have right? That is possible but it is well known that PS4 games are in fact region free,or supposed to be.
Sony's president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida also confirmed via Twitter that the PS4 is region free, meaning games from any territory can be played on any machine.
That is is the official word, however as you said Derri, there may a few that show it may not be the case.I have yet to know of any though.

The games themselves are region free but the online capabilities can be affected by region.

This was the discussion I had with a US forum manager at the Ubi forum, discussing region free for watch dogs.

I also believe some DLC released by specific developers are region locked as it often comes up with multiple BLES numbers to choose from and sometimes different countries.

DLC region locked yes,as was with the PS3.
Online capabilities it seems is linked to DLC in your linked example,as the posts in your links shows anyway.Looks like that's what they are referring to there.

Im sure many of us know you cant buy a US copy of CoD and expect European DLC (map packs) to work with it.
DLC should be from same region as the game.

Having said that however most of my CoD games on PS3 were from UK region 2,but I bought DLC from AUS PSN store which is region 4. Both are PAL regions however, and I remember when downloading map packs there was indeed a few diff versions to choose from, with diff BLES codes so you had to make sure you downloaded the right one. I know some people didnt know this and just downloaded the first on the list and so wondered why their new maps wouldnt show in game.lol
And then there were other people that just downloaded them all...lol

I think Derri is just advising that some research is under taken before you go about buying games overseas. Especially in terms of how much they cost back home compared to what you're seeing overseas, as you may end up paying more than you'd expect. Especially if you're buying them online and importing them,as there may be hidden customs costs.

I assume from what was said it can be applied generally and not just to DLC. Online differences can occur as it was said and I believe many games do have online differeances by countries so I'd personally advise not buying a game from abroad. I mean the PS4 is region free, but games can differ online like was said.

I might be mistaken, but as far as I am aware; Servers as allocated to what region the game is from. It has been like that for games I have played in the past, but not sure if the same applies to PS4 games.
