Clocks go back

It's that time of the year when the nights start putting in & the clocks go back to Greenwich Mean Time i wish they would just leave the clocks on 1 timezone all year round America has a few timezones Russia has 50

Yes, I was reminded a few days ago about this. I really don't understand all this business of changing clocks. It irritates me as I can spend anything up to an hour changing everything.

I have one of those large 'Route 66' clocks up on the wall which is an absolute nightmare to hang back up. Honestly, I can be there sliding the back of it around on the nail for a couple of minutes before it falls back onto it. My DVD/Cassette combi player requires six different steps just to change the clock (it's got no automatic change feature) that I always need to dig out the instructions for. My radio is similar. I have a new car this year so I don't know if this changes automatically or not. It's very similar to my old one (basically just an updated version) and that took me over two years before I figured out how to activate it's auto feature – which ironically the handbook claimed it didn't have. I found it purely by accident. Before that, I had to dig out the manual for that and go through about ten different steps to do it manually. Then there's the watches I own. I can guarantee there will be at least one I'll miss which will remain an hour fast for another month or two until I wear it again… I don't think my PS3 changes either as it's never been hooked up to the internet. That's just my own stuff. Then there's the clocks elsewhere in the house, including the one on the cooker.

The only things I have that I know change automatically is my laptop and (I think) my iPod.

Whilst we get an extra hour in bed on Sunday with the October change, I've actually slept straight through the last two. I've woke up at 9am thinking it's actually 8am – when it's dawned on me that I've changed the clocks the afternoon before… Not just that, it means not only do we get up to go to work in the dark (as we've been doing at the moment – it'll be just as dark again in another few weeks), we're getting home in the dark. If you spend your working days inside as I do, you never see any daylight unless it's the weekend.

The dark evenings don't so much bother me too much – it's the morning's which kill me. I never used to suffer from whatever this is in my teens, but it's really started knocking me about in my later 20's. You feel as though you're getting up in the middle of the night and it can knock me about for most of the day to the point where I just feel constantly lethargic. I don't really 'wake up' until there's some sort of light outside. As a result, until the clocks go forward again, you'll be lucky to get much more than a grunt out of me until about 9:00-9:30am…

If we had to change the clocks and I had my way, they'd be going back two hours and not just one.

Roll on next summer!

Keep in mind this is an international forum and here in AUS some states have had to put their clocks 1 hour forward for summer time a few weeks back.

I can't understand why we still do it Russia has 12 time zones i think how it must feel for them putting their clocks backwards & forwards across 2 continents Europe & Asia the Americas Australia will have a few timezones & Australia being a continent Africa & Antarctica will with them both being continents

Seriously. I think I speak for pretty much the whole world population that is sucks when the sun goes down at 4:30 everyday. Hell, I'm not even out of work at that point. All winter I can only enjoy the daylight when I go outside to smoke.

As I said before, the dark evenings don't really bother me overly as I'm usually to knackered to do anything when I finish work (5pm) anyway. There's little you can do outdoors here in the UK between now and around March anyway. It's too cold...

What gets to me are the dark mornings, which after a few weeks of respite given the hour gained, will catch up again. Therefore you get up in the dark and get home from work in the dark. Unless you have an outdoor job, you basically live like a mushroom through the winter period thanks to this change. It really gets me down. Depending on where you are in the country (the east), you'll be very lucky to make it as far as 4pm before the sun starts going down when it gets to December/January.
