Creating your first game on next-gen formats is like an awkward first date, says Call

Speaking with Edge, devs were asked how it was for them to develop for a nxet gen console. Here is what they said -

“I don’t think it’s holding next gen back. The way I look at it is the first game on a next gen console is the hardest one to make. It’s like a first date. There’s a lot of figuring out what’s going on and very little knowledge of each other. The second date, of course, gets much better, but the first date’s kind of awkward.

“Take for example Call Of Duty 2 and the way that game looked even compared to even Call Of Duty 4. It’s a significant leap forward. So I think we’ll see something similar – I hope, as a games developer in general, not just of Call Of Duty, to see massive leaps forward as the generation gets more mature.”

What do you think? How difficult is it for a developer to move on to a next gen console?

I would assume it's pretty different - new coding, working out support and that's just the very beginning. It would be like a first date with the cousin of your last girlfriend. Just awkward and kind of odd - thought that doesn't mean it won't work out... maybe.

Since its apparently easier I don't think they'll have too much drama. They'll probably be relieved if anything.

It's difficult to adapt to change most of the time. If a developer is used to develop games for one system for years then here comes a new console with more power but also comes with new architecture, it would be quite hard. It's like getting married for 10 years then you have a divorce then go on to marry another person. There would be the getting to know part, the adjustment stage, etc.

That's what I wanted to say. You have hit he nail right on it's head. It must be a bit difficult to adapt to the next gen consoles and develop games for it at a low cost.

Haha, I love this analogy. But that's pretty much the gist of it. With all the new technology and advancements with the PS4 they have to learn how to not only use them, but to exceed with them and beat what they did in the previous generations. Take, for instance, Oblivion and Skyrim. Both came out on the PS3, but because they were just learning how to develop for it when Oblivion was released, it didn't look as good as it could have been. Skyrim, since it came out after the developers got experienced with the PS3 made the game much grander in size and looks.

I'm sure if we give developers a couple years to work with the hardware then we will have some games that are really incredible looking.

I think these guys just aren't used to doing so much work. They reuse a lot of assets and their engine for Call of Duty games and now they have to actually do more than just that.

Yeah, a sad truth about these guys. They don't like working much, do they?

All they are doing is adding some new gimmick every year and selling it to us.
