Died with the hype?

Okay the game is not dead but it's pretty much sitting in the background now. I think the game is good but it sits on top of all the high expectations that it end up falling short even though the game is good. I was actually really excited about this game and when I first played it I was hooked but after a few moments in the game I just went off.

I actually liked the short story to be fair. I'm not a fan of long stories and boring gameplays so it's nice that they kept it short and out of the way. I hope they make it up with the next release.

Hype killing things seems to be becoming a trend this gen. Watch Dogs was a perfectly fine game, I had fun with it. But people were just expecting way too much and were let down when it was just another game. The same thing is happening right now with Destiny.

The media do have a habit of over-hyping many games these days. It's one reason why I prefer to actually see the game for myself and base my opinion on what I see rather than reading what one or two people write in a magazine or on some official company website somewhere. At the end of the day, these people who write them are individuals just like you and me. Individuals who, dare I say this, will get more attention from the developers and producers than you or me either. I can count on one hand the amount of computer game magazines I've bought over the last twelve years or so.

With regards to Watch Dogs - the game itself, from the five or six hours-worth of footage I watched, seemed to be 'okay' but no more than that. I never really bonded with the characters or the story. It didn't have any particular stand-out feature from what I saw. I tried to get into it but but gradually become very bored and didn't continue perusing it. To me, it just felt like a poorer alternative to the GTA series. A fair effort don't get me wrong, but certainly nothing I would pay anywhere near full retail price for.

Jesus, you watched 5-6 hours of gameplay? That's 2 Lord of the Rings movies worth of time. You take this seriously. .

I think hype tends to make good games look like they're worse than they really are. If you have very high expectations of something and they don't meet it you're obviously going to be disappointed. I'll admit I was one of the people who were disappointed with this game and was excited as all hell to play it. I felt like it just didn't deliver though. It had some great ideas, but most of them came up short in the end, especially the whole cellphone hacking the city thing.

I thought this game got waaayyyyyy over hyped. It was a good game but it wouldn't be groundbreaking unless it was released at the beginning of last gen's console cycle. The best part of the game was using hacks to escape or catch people in car chases, which was crippled by the horrible driving physics. Breaking into enemy compounds and clearing them out was fun, but not enough for this game to be more than just average.

I absolutely hate/d this game. It is basically Assassin's Creed with a different skin. It would have been nice if they advertised it as such.

We all have our own views, but Destiny has to be the most overrated and over-hyped game the PS4 has seen to date. I know I've said several times that I don't 'get' most FPS games and that I find them all very much the same as one another since around post 2008. However there's nothing I've seen on Destiny (so far) that really makes it stand out for me. It seems too busy/frantic, too complicated and the story very difficult to pick up, yet alone understand. The soundtrack really is about all I can say something really positive about. I'm sorry if FPS fans disagree with me, but I really don't get the vast popularity of these types of games any more. Red Faction and Red Faction 2 were about the last FPS titles that I actually enjoyed. That's when I enjoyed them. How many years are we going back, here...?

As for other over-hyped games, Watch Dogs would come a close second. Again, nothing about it stands out and the 'techy' mobile phone hacking business I found to be very confusing and over the top in parts. There were a few decent cut scenes from the chunk of the game I saw but I just couldn't develop any sort of feeling for the story. It wasn't bad by any means but it just didn't appeal to me. Some of the side missions/features were just plain bizarre.

Third...? Possibly Thief (which I did watch the whole game) which I found repetitive, but I think I might be a bit harsh there, even by my standards.

Yeah, you could say that...! To be fair though, if I know for a fact I'll be getting a game, I don't want to spoil it for myself. The most I'll watch will be the trailers and perhaps 10/15 minutes worth of footage at the start - just for peace of mind before I commit money to it. For 'mainstay' titles that I've played from day one (Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Silent Hill) and know for a fact I'll be buying regardless, I'll probably only see the trailers. Only once I've done them, or at least a good chunk, will I then go back and see others playing it.

In the situations where I don't have the console to play them or I know there's a very high chance I won't be getting the game for one reason or another, I'll tend to watch the bulk of the game, if not all, via someone's walkthrough. I'll happily be a spectator rather than a player. The amount of money I've saved over the last three years or so has been astronomical!

With regards to my own personal thoughts on hype, those that feel dissapointed i always think maybe it's the viewers own fault for getting so caught up in said "hype"

I'll give you an example.

I've seen one trailer for the new game Alien Isolation. I know there are many more, but i choose not to watch them for 2 reasons.

1 - If i KEPT watching more and more videos i know i would get caught up in my own little world of excitement for the game i want it to be and would believe what i'm seeing will deliver that
2 - If i watch TOOO much i'll ruin some in game suprizes and feel let down that i "knew" what was coming. Example here i already know one level what the shock moment is to make me jump.

So by not watching and analyzing every sodding little detail of a video of a game i know i'll buy, when it comes, whatever i get will be a nice suprize and as long as the game doesn't suck, i'll enjoy it blissfully unaware of what's lead up to that point.

Destiny, i watched one vid, heard all my friends were getting it, bought it, like it, but don't think it's over hyped cos i didn't pay attention to that guff, and ergo i REALLy enjoy my games, even the average ones a lot lot more

If people fall into the HYPE train, more fool them. Sorry.

As for watchdogs, the ONLY thing i would say that they have done wrong is number 4 on my definition above Mislead. I too saw the outstanding graphics of the first gameplay and thought WOW, amazing, only to see later gameplay and think, seriously.. is THAT the same game. That aside i hear the game is a solid game so if you had missed all this hype you'd still love it. It's a fine balancing act for us all to know when to stop watching trailers, but I do it when i have decided i'll get the game or not. Up until that point i'll watch and see what's going on in the trailers but not watch them over and over and over again and watch hours upon hours of gameplay. Anyone does that is caught in the hype net IMO.

I have to agree. If you were on the Ubi forums before the games launch everyone was expecting way too much from this game and I knew that from watching other people be so hyped that people would be disappointed by it.

I really enjoyed this game. Lots of fun, big open world. Wish there was more to do outside the story. I did not follow the hype other than being excited for an open world game.
