I thought I saw something on my dads playstation 4 where it said playstation plus for multiplayer game play. I know on my PS3 you didn't have to pay for multiplayer on any of the games.

Yeah, you have to pay for online play now. The service is called PlayStation Plus like you said. You won't get charged for using the internet from the browser, just for online multiplayer play. Free to play games don't require PlayStation Plus to play or download. Apps like Netflix don't require PS Plus.

how new is this? I havent heard of it until now? Have not been on the Playstation for a while, so I am assuming this is something new.

I guess they need to make their money, will need to look into this. Curious to know if they took a greedy approach to this.

Are you being sarcastic? Only asking cause although you may be new to PS4 you have been posting on the forum for quite some time now and Im sure you would have seen this asked here many time already.

btw:Its been known for over a year now.

Well my understanding is Microsoft really undercut Sony by throwing the extra money from live into exclusive content and games during the last generation. Sony came out swinging this gen by giving us a lower price system but unfortunately had to move online behind the plus network. They weren't going to let MS have an advantage this time.

It has been this way for a very long time. This only applies to the PS4 though. You get free games and great service... I fail to recognize a problem. As far as it eating up your bandwidth limits and so forth, I am not quite sure how this works. I have never had any issues.

Lolwut? I'm assuming you don't have a PS4? We've all had to pay for online since launch lol.
Yeah it sucks that there's more free online but it was a good decision by Sony so the MP servers didn't suck this gen. Sony has been very fair with the prices though IMO.

It's been known for as long as we've known about the PS4. So roughly a year, year and a half? How have you not known this if you have a PS4?

I'm not a big fan of the fact that they charge for playing multiplayer. Surely it costs money for them with servers and everything, and it makes them get more money outside of the one-time earning they get form people buying the consoles... But still, I don't really like it. I feel like I'd rather have paid another 100 dollars or more for the console itself, and never had to pay for the internet, than to pay less for the console and pay for the internet.

Surely a die-hard fan of Sony will protect them no matter what they do, and charging for the internet is no exception. Personally I'm not that biased towards Sony to think that there is anythign great with this... However, since Microsoft is already charging for Xbox live, there isn't really much of an alternative as far as paying for the internet goes.

That model wouldn't work though. Say you pay 100 dollars extra for the console. Great. Everyone now pays 100 extra.

Generations usually run for five years. So those servers need to be up for five years, at least. Probably a year or two after, since they don't want to cut the servers straight away as soon as the new generation comes out. So let's say the servers have to be up for six, seven years. That hundred dollars extra, solely for servers, is not going to last that long.
