DS - lite or original?

I am looking into the Nintendo DS for a possible Christmas present. For anyone who has one it or has used one, do you recommend the DS Lite or do you prefer the original?

The Lite is better, in my opinion. The lighting is better, it weighs less, and it's a less awkward shape. Plus there's more color options available!

How old is the person you are buying it for? You might want to casually find out what they'd prefer, especially if it's a kid, they'll want the same thing their friends have. If it's for you then I'd go with the original.

I think the Lite is easier to hold for long periods of time, as it's lighter and there isn't a weird ridge thing right where you hands go.

Who wants to hold games for a long period of time? I don't want my kids playing for a long period of time. I like the original version the best. We have played both and I think the original is the best one. It seems more stable and harder to break.

"A long period of time" as in, "more than an hour." I don't think it's that unusual to play a game for more than an hour, do you?

It's for my fourteen-year-old niece. One of her best friends apparently has one, so that's gotten her interested. I think it's a DS Lite that she has, but I'm not positive. I'm glad you mentioned colors, Teagan. I was checking to see what was available and they had a pink one and my niece is a total pink fanatic. Pink room, pink purses, you get the idea! It sounds like the original is more durable, but she's pretty careful with things. And she's big on phases. If she's still playing it a year from now, I'll be shocked.

Haha, I have the pink DS Lite, actually! It's the regular pink one, I think, not the "pearl pink" (which was a limited edition color). If you're worried about durability you can get skins and/or covers to help protect the DS, too.

I have an original DS, and my little brother has had a few DS lites. If you want something more stylish and ergonomic, go with the Lite. If you want something that can take a beating, go with the original.

Her friend does have a DS Lite as it turns out, so DS Lite it is. My niece is really very responsible, especially for a teenager, so as long as it's decently made, she should get a lot of fun use out of it.

Yeah, I don't think teens are as destructive as younger kids are, so she should be fine with the Lite. Did you get her the pink one after all?

I did prefer the Lite than the original. They were both great consoles but I found the Lite had a lighter screen and was a nicer design.
Although my DS Lite did break after only 2 years I think, were as my original DS is till going strong. I gave it to my dad to play his Mario
games.

I think the Lite is better just because it is lighter and nicer to hold. I don't think there's much to compare though to be honest, they are both great handheld devices.
