Dualshock 3 vs. Dualshock 4 controllers

Are the new additions to the controller really necessary? How do you think they will be used for playing games? The first thing that stands out about the Dualshock 4 controller is the touch screen, which I personally think is a good addition overall. On the other hand, it takes up a lot of space on the controller, so if it doesn't work out perfectly it may end up just taking up space. The one new feature that the Dualshock 3 didn't have is the "light bar" (I don't know if that's actually what it's called), which changes color based on the player number and amount of battery left. The third thing that I like about the Dualshock 4 is the new surface of the sticks, which is a bit similar to the Xbox 360's sticks.

On the other hand, a "share" button sounds completely unnecessary. That's just my opinion; I don't feel the need to share anything about the games I'm playing, but some people might. The speaker is intriguing, but if it's anything like the Wiimote's speaker, it's probably completely unnecessary.

What do you guys think? A huge improvement, or not so much?

Actually, I'm pretty thrilled with regards to the share button. The guys at Sony say that making videos and screenshots of games that you are playing could be done in a snap! That would definitely be a plus for people who like to write game reviews or guides or walkthroughs. I don't know what the touch pad would bring to the gameplay though since the area is a bit too small for my taste. I'm also not too thrilled with the light bar since for the meantime, they are just saying that it would help in switching positions when in split screen. Who would ever switch positions while playing a game?

I like how they have kept relatively the same design, I would have been dissapointed if they completely changed it around. The new trigger buttons looks like a nice improvement, and the share button I agree is a cool option to have. It still seems a bit strange to me that there would be such a button on the controller (why not just an in-menu option?) but I guess it's good to have.

I think that they want players to be able to share their game experiences without the need to go through any menus. This makes it easier to capture awesome moments in games immediately without pressing the pause/menu button.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of that. Those are the kinds of things that I do appreciate because I use them with some regularity. On the other hand, I don't really care for watching other people's videos unless they're very unusual or show something that has only been done a few times (or by a few people, etc.). I just find the idea of sharing everything you do a bit self-indulgent. That's just me, though; if people want to watch other people's videos, then by all means.

Haha, well you could put it that way. But of course, people don't have to share every second of their playtime. I, myself don't want to watch a 1 hour gameplay video of GTA V. It could be useful though if for instance, I need to find out how to clear this area or how to get that item, or how to solve this puzzle, etc. It could also be used to show off the games you have to your friends. There are so many possibilities. I also hope that if you are using a mic, your voice would also be shared. Lol.

What is really bugging me is the huge click clack sound that the touchscreen makes when you click on it. But i really like the neon light in front of it, makes it look futuristic.

Is there a video out there that demonstrates this? Interested to hear what it sounds like.

I found this on PlayStation's YouTube channel: DualShock 4 - YouTube

There are some better views up-close than what I've seen elsewhere. I didn't realize that the controller could be tracked like a motion controller can, but I'm not entirely sure how that will be used. I really like what they say about the share function, but I still think it's going to encourage a lot of people to upload a bunch of meaningless videos. Hopefully there will be a way to wade through the nonsense to get to the good stuff.

I'm okay with it, it's not like I was totally attached to the "select" button to begin with anyway, so replacing that with a share button to me just makes that space a little bit more useful than before even though I don't really participate in sharing my game footage or screencaps. As for the touchscreen, I'm not really too optimistic about it, I have a feeling developers will just find a way to use it just for the sake of using it, but we'll see if they come up with new tricks for it that would warrant its existence.
