I think there's been good changes and bad changes since the initial launch of the original PlayStation. Obviously, it’s all a matter of opinion and personal taste.
The positives?
Graphics have certainly improved leaps and bounds. I remember being very impressed with the original ‘Red Faction’ game on the PS2 and how smooth it felt compared to the relative 'clunkiness' of Quake 2 that I was used to and that I spent countless hours doing deathmatches on. The biggest leap was, as already said, from PS2 to PS3.
Voice acting has also notably improved. Go back to the first two Resident Evil titles and then play ‘6’ and you’ll see what I mean… Along the same lines, cutscenes are now almost cinematic in appearance compared to the earlier years.
Console durability seems to have improved. Whilst I’ve yet to have any major issue with any of the three consoles, the original did feel a little bit brittle with it’s slightly wobbly circular, top opener for the discs. The PS3 feels as though it’s been carved from granite in comparison. (I can’t comment upon the PS4, yet)
A big improvement was the introduction of the dual-shock analoge sticks over the straightforward up, down, left and right buttons. True, I know I've said I'm not wholly fond of them as I find them either too sensitive or not sensitive enough but I can’t deny it's improved precision without doubt.
The negatives?
This could be just my age now, but I don't think there's anywhere near the same level of gameplay as there used to be. Games seem much more linear than they once were – although to be fair the makers do disguise this reasonably well. Some go so far as being mind-numbing by giving hints and pointers of what to do next or where to go. Leave that for the gamer to decide and figure out please – that's part of the enjoyment. Fancy graphics isn't everything to a game. It's nice to have but I would rather have longer gameplay with a better storyline and more thought in it's puzzles rather than better looking backgrounds or nice looking character hands...
Whilst cutscenes are notably improved as I've said, there seems to be an awful lot of interactive ones coming in these days. I know this is a matter of taste but I'm really struggling to enjoy or see the point in them. Is it a cutscene we can sit back and savour, or is it supposed to be part of the gameplay where you’re expected to be 'Speedy Gonzales' with your fingers and thumbs?! Make up your minds! Either way, I just don't like them. I want it to be one or the other like it used to be. Sometimes a small break is what's needed.
This will be another one which will split opinion and isn’t limited to just Playstation, but I'm really not fond of the online/internet dominance with the new generation. Not everyone wants online gaming, not everyone understands it and not everyone has and/or afford top of the line internet packages. For those who prefer single player campaigns and/or just want to slot in a disc and play (i.e – me), they’re going to feel increasingly short changed over their purchases as the focus is clearly no longer on them despite paying just as much for the initial game purchase. This really is a big personal bugbear of mine. My opinion on this may very well change over time but for now this is how I stand on it.
