A Petition For Nintendo To Eliminate Region Locks Is Gaining Steam - Forbes

Now that Microsoft has reversed their stance on always online and used games, which includes not having the Xbox One region locked Nintendo remains the sole company to still enforce region locking on their systems. Now fans are starting a petition for Nintendo make all their hardware region free. It is uncertain on how Nintendo will respond but the online petition is gaining steam so we will have to see where it goes from here.

They should go the sega route and become a 3rd party publisher.

There are so many people who buy imported games?
I'm really surprised. Me, it does not bother me at all. Sometimes people whining about things that not even touch.

And anyway, between us, we know that the Wii U will be hacked like the Wii. Just be patient before you can play games from any region.

I coincidentally was thinking about region locking too before coming in here, by which I mean I did not really understand at all why it was necessary. So I looked it up and found out that it's because of the different laws and minor differences in each country's rating system. I still don't understand much of why it's too big of a deal though, except for if Japan has a lot of exclusives that we may want to play locally, which can be bothersome, I admit.
